Background: People with diabetes are at increased risk of hospitalisation, morbidity, and mortality following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Long-term outcomes for people with diabetes previously hospitalised with COVID-19 are, however, unknown. This study aimed to determine the longer-term physical and mental health effects of COVID-19 in people with and without diabetes.

Mammalian lactation is a dynamic process that develops throughout the lifespan of an organism. Here we present a framework for a third semester core course in biology that centers course content on lactation allowing examination of the developmental process as a dynamic whole-body experience involving changes occurring at the molecular, cellular, and organ levels of organization. Inequitable economic, socio- and geopolitical systems structure social determinants of health, affecting rates of breastfeeding in human populations.

Purpose: Non-fusion surgical options for pediatric scoliosis management such as vertebral body tethering (VBT) offer an alternative to spinal fusion. With this study, we aim to evaluate the postoperative outcomes in boys versus girls who have undergone VBT. Our hypothesis is that girls and boys will have similar outcomes by 2-year follow-up.

Research on psychedelic medicines is experiencing a revival. Some clinicians, scientists, and ethicists believe that psychedelics are so different from other treatments that they warrant special consideration in how they are researched, regulated, commercialized, and administered. Others argue that psychedelic medicines show clinical potential, but they should be treated like other medical interventions.

Background: At the beginning of the 2018-2020 outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), no vaccine had been licensed. However, cluster-randomized evidence from Guinea in 2015 had indicated that ring vaccination around new cases (targeting contacts and contacts-of-contacts) with the use of single-dose live-replicating rVSV-ZEBOV-GP vaccine reduced EVD rates starting 10 days after vaccination. Thus, ring vaccination was added to the standard control measures for that outbreak.

In this Review, we examine the concurrent outbreaks of mpox in Africa, focusing on clade 1a, the newly emerged clade 1b, and clade 2b lineage A, and how they differ from the 2022 global outbreak caused by clade 2b lineage B.1. Historically, clades 1a and 2a have caused sporadic, small outbreaks in central and west Africa, respectively, primarily through zoonotic transmission.

We compared the 2 year outcomes after proximal interphalangeal joint surface replacement in 68 joints with severe (>15°) preoperative longitudinal axis deviation and 50 joints without (<5°) preoperative deviation. Patients in both groups had a mean preoperative brief Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire score of 47 and had similar 2 year scores of 72 (95% CI 68-77) (severe deviation) and 70 (95% CI 65-76) (no deviation). Pain, proximal interphalangeal joint range of motion, grip strength and complications did not differ between the groups at 2 years.

Background: People hospitalised for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have elevated incidence of diabetes. However, it is unclear whether this is due to shared risk factors, confounding or stress hyperglycaemia in response to acute illness.

Methods: We analysed a multicentre prospective cohort study (PHOSP-COVID) of people ≥18 years discharged from NHS hospitals across the United Kingdom following COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the effectiveness and safety of the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine against Zaire Ebolavirus disease among contacts of EVD survivors, focusing on the influence of pre-existing immunity on vaccination outcomes.
  • Ten percent of participants had pre-existing antibodies, but both those with and without antibodies showed significant increases in IgG levels post-vaccination, indicating strong immune responses.
  • The findings support the vaccine's safety and suggest that pre-vaccination antibody screening is unnecessary, as it does not negatively impact the immune response to the vaccine.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of a brief psychoeducation training program in reducing mental health stigma, both toward others and oneself, among public safety personnel, while also comparing the relative effectiveness of in-person and online training modalities. In total, 1686 public safety personnel in Florida received psychoeducation on the mental health impacts of public safety work. Participants completed pre- and post-training questionnaires assessing demographics, mental health knowledge, and mental health stigma toward others and themselves.

Background: To meet the WHO target of eradicating yaws by 2030, highly sensitive and specific diagnostic tools are needed. A multiplex Treponema pallidum-Haemophilus ducreyi loop-mediated isothermal amplification (TPHD-LAMP) test holds promise as a near-patient diagnostic tool for yaws and H ducreyi. We conducted a prospective evaluation in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, and the Republic of the Congo to determine the diagnostic accuracy of the TPHD-LAMP test, as well as to assess its acceptability, feasibility, and cost.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding the relationship between the structure and properties of electrocatalysts is essential for designing better materials, and the Aarhus University reactor for electrochemical studies using X-rays (AUREX) provides a versatile and user-friendly setup for this research.
  • The AUREX cell allows for various advanced measurement techniques like total scattering, diffraction, and absorption spectroscopy on commercial silver electrocatalysts, enabling real-time observation of structural changes during electrochemical reactions.
  • The findings reveal that silver transitions from a face-centered cubic structure to other phases under oxidative conditions, and the setup is crucial for studying these phase transitions, highlighting the need for careful beam settings to avoid interference during experiments.

Background: Workplace violence (WPV) in healthcare has become an issue worldwide, with increasing prevalence after the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, WPV in any setting has individual and systemic repercussions. However, despite extensive literature reporting the prevalence of WPV in healthcare worldwide, effective, standardized prevention policies have not been established.

Article Synopsis
  • Integrated approaches to mapping skin Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) may optimize resource allocation, but extensive data covering multiple endemic countries was previously lacking.
  • Between March 2021 and March 2023, integrated case searches were conducted in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, and Ghana, screening over 61,000 individuals for various skin conditions including yaws and other NTDs.
  • The findings revealed that 18.6% of those screened had skin lesions, with the majority being children; yaws was confirmed in a varying proportion of cases across the three countries, while scabies and fungal infections were the most commonly diagnosed conditions.

Background: In patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) requiring supplemental oxygen, dexamethasone reduces acute severity and improves survival, but longer-term effects are unknown. We hypothesised that systemic corticosteroid administration during acute COVID-19 would be associated with improved health-related quality of life (HRQoL) 1 year after discharge.

Methods: Adults admitted to hospital between February 2020 and March 2021 for COVID-19 and meeting current guideline recommendations for dexamethasone treatment were included using two prospective UK cohort studies (Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 and the International Severe Acute Respiratory and emerging Infection Consortium).

We examined the sexual double standard (SDS) toward sexually active gay men and lesbian women and the role that participants' masculinity and femininity played in their evaluations. We hypothesized that there would be a reverse SDS in which highly sexually active lesbian women would be evaluated positively and highly sexually active gay men negatively, with both being evaluated more negatively than less sexually active gay men and lesbians. We also hypothesized that masculinity would moderate this effect, with participant masculinity being positively related to stronger negative evaluations of highly sexually active gay targets and more positive evaluations of highly sexually active lesbian targets.
