Proteomic Identification and Quantification of Snake Venom Biomarkers in Venom and Plasma Extracellular Vesicles.

The global exploration of snakebites requires the use of quantitative omics approaches to characterize snake venom as it enters into the systemic circulation. These omics approaches give insights into the venom proteome, but a further exploration is warranted to analyze the venom-reactome for the identification of snake venom biomarkers. The recent discovery of extracellular vesicles (EVs), and their critical cellular functions, has presented them as intriguing sources for biomarker discovery and disease diagnosis.

Effects of environmental enrichment on the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mouse model.

The manner in which an animal's environment is furnished may have significant implications for animal welfare as well as research outcomes. We evaluated four different housing conditions to determine the effects of what has been considered standard rodent enrichment and the exercise opportunities those environments allow on disease progression in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mouse model. Forty-eight copper/zinc superoxide dismutase mice (strain: B6SJL-TgN [SOD1-G931]1Gur) (SOD1) and 48 control (C) (strain: B6SJL-TgN[SOD1]2Gur) male mice were randomly assigned to four different conditions where 12 SOD1 and 12 C animals were allotted to each condition (n = 96).

The goal of this research was to determine when harbor seal pup vocalizations become sufficiently distinctive to allow individual recognition. A total of 4593 calls were analyzed from 15 captive pups. Nineteen were harsh, broadband, staccato calls used in an aggressive context.

Environmental enrichment-related injury in a macaque (Macaca fascicularis): intestinal linear foreign body.

A three-year old male cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis) presented with clinical signs of anorexia and depression that decreased over a 48-hour period. Results of abdominal radiography abdominocentesis, blood biochemical analysis and CBC suggested septic peritonitis. Exploratory laparotomy revealed multiple perforations along the mesenteric border of the small intestine.

Environmental enrichment devices are a potential way to enhance psychological well-being in laboratory animals. The effects of such devices need to be systematically evaluated before they are recommended for widespread use. The purpose of this research was to monitor the behavioural and physiological responses of adult female rhesus macaques to a simple enrichment device.

Isolated injury of the second tarsometatarsal joint. A case report.

Injuries to tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) joints are subtle, potentially disabling, and are still often overlooked. This case report of a rare isolated second Lisfranc joint dislocation (LJD) in a 46-year-old woman illustrates the typically subtle roentgenographic findings. A careful scrutiny of the base of the second metatarsal bone, especially on the lateral roentgenogram, shows alignment with the middle cuneiform.

Influence of cage size on heart rate and behavior in rhesus monkeys.

We studied 6 singly caged adult female rhesus monkeys to determine whether increased cage size had any effect on behavior or heart rate. Two monkeys at a time were placed in cages 40% larger than their standard cage for 1 week on 2 occasions, using a counter-balanced design. Direct behavioral observations were performed 75 minutes/week on each monkey.

A conservative approach to anterior knee pain.

Eight-five patients with sole anterior knee pain were treated with a physical therapy program and a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory medication. Physical therapy consisted of regimented stretching exercises, quadriceps electrical stimulation, isometric quadriceps sets, ice application after treatment, progressive straight-leg raising, and short-arc quadriceps sets. After a disciplined progression of physical therapy and daily activity, patients were questioned about the amount of their knee dysfunction secondary to pain and their level of activity.

Immunoglobulins and complement in demyelination induced in mice by Theiler's virus.

Intracerebral inoculation of Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) produces chronic demyelination and persistent infection in the central nervous system (CNS) of susceptible SJL mice. This series of experiments examined the contribution of humoral immunity and C to myelin destruction. As in multiple sclerosis, mice persistently infected with TMEV had elevated levels of IgG and oligoclonal bands in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Misinterpretation of CT scans in the skull base can result from artifacts due to abrupt density variations of anatomical structure. In this report a wide dorsum sella with low attenuation medullary cavity was initially mistaken on axial scans for an enhancing suprasellar mass. The correct diagnosis was made with follow-up scans based upon thinner cuts, slice angulation negative to the baseline, and reconstructed coronal and sagittal images.

Frequency and significance of antibody to double-stranded DNA in chronic active hepatitis.

To assess the frequency and significance of immunoglobulin G antibody to double-stranded DNA in chronic active hepatitis, 99 patients with severe disease were tested for the antibody by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of established sensitivity and specificity. Antibody was detected in 56 patients (57%) and occurred with similar frequency in patients with autoimmune (64%), idiopathic (46%) and type B (43%) disease. The mean serum level of antibody was higher in autoimmune disease but it was not significantly different from that in the other diagnostic categories.

How lupoid is lupoid hepatitis?

The records of 89 patients with hepatitis B surface antigen, negative severe chronic active hepatitis and antinuclear antibody (ANA) positivity were reviewed to assess the degree of clinical similarity between this disorder and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Although immunologic abnormalities, such as antibodies to native DNA and positive lupus erythematosus cell preparations were common, few patients with ANA positive chronic active hepatitis had clinical features to suggest SLE. The 1971 preliminary criteria and the 1982 revision of the American Rheumatism Association criteria for classification of SLE were 93 and 91% specific, respectively.
