Fish are some of the most threatened vertebrates in the world due to their often-sensitive response to environmental changes. Major land-use changes in the European Alps have direct and indirect impacts on fish communities, and these impacts are expected to increase in the future. Therefore, the identification of factors that are associated with the distribution of fish communities is of great importance to develop guidelines for management, precautions and sustainable use of running waters.

Economically motivated adulteration (EMA) of foods has become an increasing concern in recent years, with lemon juice as a popular target. In this work, an optimized preparation procedure for the isolation of citric acid from lemon juice was validated using elemental analyzer-isotope ratio MS (EA-IRMS) to detect adulteration with exogenous citric acid. Additionally, 69 imported lemon juice samples were evaluated using combustion module-cavity ring down spectrometry (CM-CRDS) and compared with the well-established EA-IRMS.

In the last several years, economically motivated adulteration (EMA) of foods including honey has received increased attention. The addition of inexpensive sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup or cane sugar to honey is still encountered despite scientific methods that can routinely detect this type of adulteration. The standard method for detection of these adulterants utilizes isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS); however, this technique requires an elevated degree of technical knowledge for operation as well as a high cost for purchase and maintenance.

In acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chemotherapy resistance remains prevalent and poorly understood. Using functional proteomics of patient AML specimens, we identified MEF2C S222 phosphorylation as a specific marker of primary chemoresistance. We found that knock-in mutant mice engineered to block MEF2C phosphorylation exhibited normal hematopoiesis, but were resistant to leukemogenesis induced by MEF2C phosphorylation was required for leukemia stem cell maintenance and induced by MARK kinases in cells.

The Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE) is a popular 42-item self-report assessment of psychosis proneness (PP) that has been widely-translated. However, there is as yet no validation of CAPE in non-Western languages. Here, we validated a Chinese translation of CAPE ("CAPE-C") in a young Chinese community sample.

Parental behavioural traits can be transmitted by non-genetic mechanisms to the offspring. Although trait transmission via sperm has been extensively researched, epidemiological studies indicate the exclusive/prominent maternal transmission of many non-genetic traits. Since maternal conditions impact the offspring during gametogenesis and through fetal/early-postnatal life, the resultant phenotype is likely the aggregate of consecutive germline and somatic effects; a concept that has not been previously studied.

The genomes of more than 50 organisms have now been manipulated due to rapid advancement of gene editing technology. One way to perform gene editing in the mouse using the CRISPR/CAS system, guide RNA (gRNA) and CAS9 mRNA transcribed in vitro are microinjected into fertilized eggs that are then allowed to develop to term. As a rule, gRNAs are tested first in tissue culture cells and the one with the highest locus-specific cleavage activity is chosen for microinjection.

Intermediate phenotypes (IPs) are defined as measurable liability traits underlying complex phenotypes, posited to be more genetically tractable than the phenotypes themselves. Here we review evidence for cognition as an IP of psychosis, and highlight topical advances in the literature: first, heritability estimation of cognitive abilities using genomewide complex-trait analysis; second, evidence that cognition lies upstream to schizophrenia liability; third, use of polygenic risk scores rather than single genetic variants to examine genetic overlap between cognitive IPs and schizophrenia; and fourth, use of cognitive IPs for schizophrenia risk gene discovery and functional characterization. We end with future directions in using cognitive IPs to study genetic risk of psychosis, including methodological refinements and shifting research focus from identifying IPs to using them.

The Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE) has been used extensively as a measurement for psychosis proneness in clinical and research settings. However, no prior review and meta-analysis have comprehensively examined psychometric properties (reliability and validity) of CAPE scores across different studies. To study CAPE's internal reliability--ie, how well scale items correlate with one another--111 studies were reviewed.

The relative linguistic transparency of the Asian counting system has been used to explain Asian students' relative superiority in cross-cultural comparisons of mathematics achievement. To test the validity and extent of linguistic transparency in accounting for mathematical abilities, this study tested Chinese and British primary school children. Children in Hong Kong can learn mathematics using languages with both regular (Chinese) and irregular (English) counting systems, depending on their schools' medium of instruction.

The long-term risk of malignancy associated with stem cell therapies is a significant concern in the clinical application of this exciting technology. We report a cancer-selective strategy to enhance the safety of stem cell therapies. Briefly, using a cell engineering approach, we show that aggressive cancers derived from human or murine induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are strikingly sensitive to temporary MYC blockade.

Experience-dependent plasticity shapes postnatal development of neural circuits, but the mechanisms that refine dendritic arbors, remodel spines, and impair synaptic activity are poorly understood. Mature brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) modulates neuronal morphology and synaptic plasticity, including long-term potentiation (LTP) via TrkB activation. BDNF is initially translated as proBDNF, which binds p75(NTR).

Hematopoietic macrochimerism, which is rarely seen after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), has been linked to the development of graft versus host disease (GvHD). We report on a patient with GvHD after OLT in whom full engraftment of donor-derived, multilineage hematopoiesis occurred, indicating that the liver contains pluripotent hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) capable to restore hematopoiesis in recipients. Although preventing graft rejection, standard immunosuppressive therapy may be under certain immunological conditions not sufficient to prevent GvHD.

Treatment of acute cardiac ischemia focuses on reestablishment of blood flow in coronary arteries. However, impaired microvascular perfusion damages peri-infarct tissue, despite arterial patency. Identification of cytokines that induce microvascular dysfunction would provide new targets to limit microvascular damage.

There have been few detailed studies of viral kinetics after liver transplantation (LT), and conflicting data have been reported on viral loads and the severity of recurrent hepatitis C virus (HCV) disease. This long-term study aimed to examine (1) the impact of HCV RNA levels at specific points in time within the first year and (2) the influence of interleukin-28B (IL-28B) genotypes on patient outcomes and the severity of recurrent HCV disease. The viral loads were measured 2, 4, 12, 24, and 48 weeks after LT, and the recipient/donor IL-28B genotypes of 164 patients were determined.

Specific chromatin marks keep master regulators of differentiation silent yet poised for activation by extracellular signals. We report that nodal TGF-β signals use the poised histone mark H3K9me3 to trigger differentiation of mammalian embryonic stem cells. Nodal receptors induce the formation of companion Smad4-Smad2/3 and TRIM33-Smad2/3 complexes.

Background: Although percutaneous biopsies are considered to be the gold standard in diagnosing pancreas graft rejection, they are not performed routinely because of their association with severe complications. On the other hand, correct diagnosis of rejection is essential but may be difficult in cases of enteric drainage, particularly in patients with a pancreas transplant alone or a pancreas after kidney transplant.

Methods: Pancreas recipients who underwent enteroscopy between May 2005 and September 2009 were included in this retrospective analysis.

Wide-SIMD hardware is power and area efficient, but it is challenging to efficiently map ray tracing algorithms to such hardware especially when the rays are incoherent. The two most commonly used schemes are either packet tracing, or relying on a separate traversal stack for each SIMD lane. Both work great for coherent rays, but suffer when rays are incoherent: The former experiences a dramatic loss of SIMD utilization once rays diverge; the latter requires a large local storage, and generates multiple incoherent streams of memory accesses that present challenges for the memory system.

A nonsense mutation in the human cereblon gene (CRBN) causes a mild type of autosomal recessive non-syndromic intellectual disability (ID). Animal studies show that crbn is a cytosolic protein with abundant expression in the hippocampus (HPC) and neocortex (CTX). Its diverse functions include the developmental regulation of ion channels at the neuronal synapse, the mediation of developmental programs by ubiquitination, and a target for herpes simplex type I virus in HPC neurons.

Rex1 (Zfp42), GeneID 132625, is a gene whose expression is closely associated with pluripotency/multipotency in both mouse and human embryonic stem cells. To study the function of the murine Rex1 gene in vivo, we have used cre/lox technology to create Rex1(floxed) mice and mice deficient in Rex1 gene function. Rex1(-/-)males are characterized by an age-associated decrease in sperm counts, abnormal sperm morphology, and mild testicular atrophy.
