Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the safety of the intranasal, live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) in children aged 1.5 to 18 with a history of intermittent wheezing.
  • Results showed no increased risk of medically-attended respiratory illnesses or asthma exacerbation after receiving LAIV, whether it was their first dose or consecutive doses.
  • Additionally, children without any wheezing history also showed no increased risk for developing new-onset asthma after receiving the vaccine.

Background: Failure after radical prostatectomy can occur even out to 25 years after surgery. Therefore, it is important that studies have sufficient follow-up to determine more accurately the risk of failure. We evaluated a large cohort of patients for pathologic findings and risk of failure with a median follow-up of 9.

Background: Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) has been isolated from children with acute respiratory infection worldwide. Its epidemiology remains to be defined in children with cystic fibrosis (CF). We describe the epidemiology and clinical impact of hMPV in CF children and compared it to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

PSAPP mice expressing the "Swedish" amyloid precursor protein and M146L presenilin-1 mutations are a well-characterized model for spontaneous amyloid plaque formation. Bacopa monniera has a long history of use in India as an anti-aging and memory-enhancing ethnobotanical therapy. To evaluate the effect of Bacopa monniera extract (BME) on amyloid (Abeta) pathology in PSAPP mice, two doses of BME (40 or 160 mg/kg/day) were administered starting at 2 months of age for either 2 or 8 months.

Objective: Influenza-associated deaths in healthy children that were reported during the 2003-2004 influenza season heightened the public awareness of the seriousness of influenza in children. In 1996-1998, a pivotal phase III trial was conducted in children who were 15 to 71 months of age. Live attenuated influenza vaccine, trivalent (LAIV-T), was shown to be safe and efficacious.

When determining the carboplatin dosage from the Calvert formula, there are a lack of data when evaluating patients with cachexia or body mass index (BMI)>or=27. If the Cockcroft and Gault (C-G) creatinine clearance (CrCl) equation is utilized and substituted for glomerular filtration rate in the Calvert formula, the chance for inaccurate dosing occurs especially in these populations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the target carboplatin area under the concentration (AUC) with the actual AUC achieved in cachectic or BMI>or=27 patients.

Previous studies have demonstrated variation in vascular events with respect to season and time of day. Changes in barometric pressure display daily and seasonal variations and could modulate the occurrence of vascular events. The objective of this study was to determine whether a relation exists between changes in barometric pressure and occurrence of stroke or acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

Falling is the most common hospital accident, and up to 15% of fallers sustain a serious injury. This study focused on developing a simple, practical fall risk screener using routine admission and daily in-hospital stay data. A case-control design was used.

Highest attack rates for influenza occur in children. Immunization of schoolchildren with inactivated influenza vaccine in Michigan and Japan was associated with decreased morbidity and mortality, respectively, in older community contacts. An open-labeled, non-randomized, community-based trial in children with the cold adapted influenza vaccine, trivalent (CAIV-T) was initiated to determine the coverage necessary to reduce spread of influenza in the community.

Monoclonal antibody-directed therapy has been used as an effective treatment for some cancers that overexpress HER2/neu and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Overexpression of the HER2/neu oncogene and VEGF has been reported to occur in adenocarcinomas of the colon. Assessing whether HER2/neu and VEGF overexpression could serve as prognostic indicators for stage II colon cancer may provide insight into optimal treatment following surgery.

Purpose: Androgen ablation is the standard treatment for recurrent and metastatic prostate cancer. Surprisingly few studies have documented the specific results for local and distant failure in patients treated primarily with radiation or radical prostatectomy. We report the long-term outcome of a series of those patients.

Background: The efficacy of the intranasal, live-attenuated, trivalent cold-adapted influenza virus vaccine (CAIV-T) against influenza A(H3N2) and B infections in healthy persons is established, but its effectiveness against natural influenza A(H1N1) infection is unknown.

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of CAIV-T in healthy children during the 2000-2001 influenza A(H1N1) and B epidemic.

Design: Community-based, nonrandomized, open-label trial from August 1998 through April 2001.

Coronary artery revascularization by either percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass graft surgery in patients >/=80 years of age can be accomplished with acceptable in-hospital and 2-year clinical outcomes. However, up to 20% of patients have a prolonged recovery and are unable to immediately return home. It is important that this information become part of the discussion with patients and their families so realistic expectations can be developed.

Purpose: To test whether nausea and vomiting or fatigue correlated with psychosocial variables.

Design: Descriptive, using secondary data from a prenatal database of 113 women in prenatal care in Texas. Mean gestational duration was 59 days at the time of data collection.

Background: Early studies have suggested that there may be differences in the concentration of lipoprotein particles and their associated apolipoproteins in arterial and venous blood and that this gradient might explain a proclivity to develop atherosclerotic lesions. The aim of this study was to use current methods of analysis to determine levels of these components, including particle densities and several common inflammatory markers in arterial and venous blood.

Methods: Samples of arterial and venous blood were obtained nearly simultaneously in 26 patients undergoing right and left heart catheterization.

Background: The fate of patients discharged the day following off-pump coronary bypass (OPCAB) has not previously been reported. We studied the mortality and readmissions of a consecutive series of patients discharged after OPCAB, and compared the outcomes of those discharged the day following surgery to the rest of the group.

Methods: All patients having OPCAB through median sternotomy during the calendar year 2000 by a single surgeon were retrospectively reviewed.

Background: Alcoholic hepatitis is characterized by acute, or acute-on-chronic hepatic failure and associated with a high mortality. Specific therapies should be considered for those at high risk of mortality. The Mayo End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score is a marker of disease severity and mortality in persons with chronic alcoholic liver disease.
