Explanatory mechanisms for the association between poor exercise capacity and infections following surgery are underexplored. Acute ethanol exposure affects the nervous system as a stimulant at low concentrations and as a depressant at higher concentrations, eventually resulting in motor dysfunction and uncoordination.
