Fat emboli in total knee arthroplasty: a prospective randomized study of computer-assisted navigation vs standard surgical technique.

A prospective exploratory study of fat emboli in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty was performed in patients randomly assigned to surgery with computer-assisted navigation or standard technique. Transesophageal echocardiography of the right atrium was recorded for 5 consecutive 1-minute intervals after tourniquet deflation. Emboli were graded on a scale of 0 to 3 based on embolism size, amount of atrium filled, and duration of embolic shower, creating an overall score of 0 to 9.

Use of a custom stemless anatomic femoral component for an incarcerated femoral reamer.

Most modern femoral components used in total hip arthroplasty have stems that engage a certain length of the femoral diaphysis. Retained hardware can pose a problem with placement of the femoral component during total hip arthroplasty and often require removal. A patient presented for total hip arthroplasty with a retained reamer in the proximal femur from a previous revision knee arthroplasty.

This study reports the results and early failures using the Graft Augmentation Prosthesis ring in the reconstruction of acetabular defects encountered during total hip arthroplasty. Seventeen consecutive Graft Augmentation Prosthesis rings were used during 7 complex primary and 10 revision hip arthroplasties. Five patients died during the follow-up period.

A pilot study on continuous femoral perineural catheter for analgesia after total knee arthroplasty: the effect on physical rehabilitation and outcomes.

Two techniques of postoperative analgesia for primary total knee arthroplasty were compared retrospectively. Twenty-four patients received a femoral nerve catheter with continuous infusion of ropivacaine (FNC group), whereas 26 patients received intravenous (IV) opioids (IV opioid group). Pain and rehabilitation scores and hospital length of stay (LOS) were compared.
