Island populations repeatedly evolve extreme body sizes, but the genomic basis of this pattern remains largely unknown. To understand how organisms on islands evolve gigantism, we compared genome-wide patterns of gene expression in Gough Island mice, the largest wild house mice in the world, and mainland mice from the WSB/EiJ wild-derived inbred strain. The Transforming growth factor β (Tgf-β) pathway, by signaling via the activation of Smad transcription factors, induces the expression of many diverse downstream target genes thereby regulating a vast array of cellular events essential for proper development and homeostasis. In order for a specific cell type to properly interpret the Tgf-β signal and elicit a specific cellular response, cell-specific transcriptional co-factors often cooperate with the Smads to activate a discrete set of genes in the appropriate temporal and spatial manner. Here, via a conditional knockout approach, we show that mice mutant for Forkhead Box O transcription factor FoxO1 exhibit an enamel hypomaturation defect which phenocopies that of the Smad3 mutant mice.

An embryonic staging system for Molossus rufus (also widely known as Molossus ater) was devised using 17 reference specimens obtained during the postimplantation period of pregnancy from wild-caught, captive-bred females. This was done in part by comparing the embryos to a developmental staging system that had been created for another, relatively unrelated bat, Carollia perspicillata (family Phyllostomidae). Particular attention was paid to the development of species-specific features, such as wing and ear morphology, and these are discussed in light of the adaptive significance of these structures in the adult.

Population structuring in species inhabiting marine environments such as the Northeast Atlantic Ocean (NEA) and Mediterranean Sea (MS) has usually been explained based on past and present physical barriers to gene flow and isolation by distance (IBD). Here, we examined the relative importance of these factors on population structuring of the common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis by using methods of phylogenetic inference and hypothesis testing coupled with coalescent and classical population genetic parameter estimation. Individuals from 10 Atlantic and 15 Mediterranean sites were sequenced for 659 bp of the mitochondrial COI gene (259 sequences).

Rationale And Objectives: The authors investigated the feasibility of using computed tomography (CT) with CO2 gas as a negative contrast agent for detecting pulmonary emboli in a porcine model.

Materials And Methods: Seven pigs with or without pulmonary emboli underwent thoracic imaging with multi-detector row spiral CT. To identify optimal injection and scanning protocols, the first four pigs were scanned repeatedly in the supine and prone positions with different scan delays (10, 15, and 20 seconds) and different volumes of CO2 (60, 120, 180, and 240 mL), which were hand infused (each infusion took 10-15 seconds).

Three-dimensional (3D) perfusion imaging allows the assessment of pulmonary blood flow in parenchyma and main pulmonary arteries simultaneously. MRI using laser-polarized (3)He gas clearly shows the ventilation distribution with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this report, the feasibility of combined lung MR angiography, perfusion, and ventilation imaging is demonstrated in a porcine model.
