Resident duty hours in Canada: a survey and national statement.

Physicians in general, and residents in particular, are adapting to duty schedules in which they have fewer continuous work hours; however, there are no Canadian guidelines on duty hours restrictions. To better inform resident duty hour policy in Canada, we set out to prepare a set of recommendations that would draw upon evidence reported in the literature and reflect the experiences of resident members of the Canadian Association of Internes and Residents (CAIR). A survey was prepared and distributed electronically to all resident members of CAIR.

A systematic review of educational resources for teaching patient handover skills to resident physicians and other healthcare professionals.

Background: As physicians reduce their work hours, transfer of patient care becomes more common; this is a time of heightened risk to patients. Training in patient handover skills may reduce this risk. The objective of this study was to systematically review the literature regarding education models available to teach handovers skills to healthcare professionals.

Renal tubular epithelial cell self-injury through Fas/Fas ligand interaction promotes renal allograft injury.

Tubular epithelial cells (TECs) coexpress Fas and Fas ligand (FasL), which could influence renal allograft injury. While TECs can resist apoptosis by Fas antibody, TEC apoptosis by contact with adjacent TECs has not been studied. Fas expression increased in TECs with cytokine treatment (IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha) while abundant FasL levels were not altered.

Ischemia/reperfusion induces the recruitment of leukocytes from whole blood under flow conditions.

Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) occurs in a number of pathological conditions, including myocardial infarction, stroke, and organ transplantation. During the reperfusion phase, leukocytes are recruited into affected tissues, where they can cause tissue damage and organ failure. Various in vitro models have been developed to study the role of adhesion molecules in I/R-mediated leukocyte recruitment.
