Inadequate adherence to a gluten-free diet in coeliac disease triggers autoimmune reactions and can reduce the quality of life. The strict diet requires constant vigilance, which can cause psychological distress. Our research aimed to assess the quality of life in adult patients with coeliac disease and to find a correlation between quality of life, dietary intervention, and adherence.

Article Synopsis
  • Cystic fibrosis-related abnormal glucose tolerance (CF-related AGT) is prevalent among children and adults, with 31% of children and 51% of adults affected, but current guidelines only recommend screening starting at age 10, missing early detection opportunities.
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of 457 studies, encompassing over 520,000 patients, showed that even in children aged 5-10, 42% exhibited abnormal glucose tolerance.
  • The study advocates for earlier AGT screening starting at age 5 to allow for timely intervention, emphasizing the need for updated guidelines and further research in this area.

Introduction: Within 5 years of having acute pancreatitis (AP), approximately 20% of patients develop diabetes mellitus (DM), which later increases to approximately 40%. Some studies suggest that the prevalence of prediabetes (PD) and/or DM can grow as high as 59% over time. However, information on risk factors is limited.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the prevalence of acute cholangitis (AC) and cholecystitis (CC) among patients diagnosed with biliary acute pancreatitis (AP), using the 2018 Tokyo guidelines, highlighting a potential for overdiagnosis and overuse of medical interventions.
  • - Results show that around 70% of biliary AP patients met the criteria for AC/CC; antibiotic use was high (77.4%), with low mortality in mild cases but significantly higher rates in severe cases.
  • - The authors conclude that existing diagnostic criteria often overlap and may misclassify AP conditions, suggesting a need for clearer, disease-specific guidelines and randomized trials on antibiotic necessity in these patients.

Introduction: Pediatric acute pancreatitis (PAP) has an increasing incidence and is now estimated to be almost as common as in adults. Up to 30% of patients with PAP will develop moderate or severe disease course (M/SPAP), characterized by organ failure, local or systemic complications. There is still no consensus regarding on-admission severity prediction in these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • In pediatric patients with acute pancreatitis (AP), having a family history of pancreatic diseases is linked to an earlier onset of recurrent acute pancreatitis (ARP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP), particularly peaking in children aged 6-17 years.
  • Analysis of data from the Hungarian Pancreatic Study Group showed that those with a positive family history had a significantly higher rate of ARP/CP and a greater tendency for idiopathic AP in early childhood, along with increased alcohol and smoking rates in adolescence and early adulthood.
  • Contrary to beliefs about adults, positive family history does not predict ARP or CP in adults; therefore, it should not be treated as a prognostic factor for them

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess the risk of postoperative respiratory complications (PoRCs) in children undergoing adenotonsillar (AT) surgery, comparing those with and without obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) of varying severity.
  • - It analyzed 19 observational studies, revealing that children with moderate and severe OSA experienced more PoRCs than those without OSA, although there was no significant increase in major complications overall.
  • - The findings suggest a need for standardized guidelines and improved postoperative monitoring for children with moderate to severe OSA, while indicating that mild OSA does not carry a significantly higher risk of complications.

Extensive research is focused on the role of liquid biopsy in pancreatic cancer since reliable diagnostic and follow-up biomarkers represent an unmet need for this highly lethal malignancy. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on the prognostic value of exosomal biomarkers in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and CENTRAL were systematically searched on the 18th of January, 2021 for studies reporting on the differences in overall (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in PDAC patients with positive vs negative exosomal biomarkers isolated from blood.

In January 2019, the Safe Food for Canadians Act/Safe Food for Canadians regulations (heretofore identified as SFCR) came into force across Canada and brought a more streamlined process to food safety practice in Canada. Food trade and production processes have evolved rapidly in recent decades, as Canada imports and exports food products; therefore it is critically important to remain aware of the latest advances responding to a range of challenges and opportunities in the food safety value chain. Looking through the optics of the recent SFCR framework, this paper places the spotlight on leading domestic and international research and practices to help strengthen food safety policies of the future.

Background: Metabolic risk factors, such as obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia are independent risk factors for the development of various complications in acute pancreatitis (AP). Hypertriglyceridemia dose-dependently elicits pancreatotoxicity and worsens the outcomes of AP. The role of hyperglycemia, as a toxic metabolic factor in the clinical course of AP, has not been examined yet.
