As the baby boom generation ages, it is projected that by 2050 the number of Americans older than 65 years of age will increase to a staggering 88 million. Those Americans 85 years and older will soon represent the fastest growing segment of the population, predicted to surge to 20 million by 2060. Management of chronic disease processes affecting older Americans will consume 86% of the nation's healthcare expenditures.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of misoprostol for oral mucositis secondary to high-dose chemotherapy.

Purpose: Misoprostol, a synthetic analog of prostaglandin E1, has anti-inflammatory and mucosa-protecting properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of misoprostol oral rinse in reducing the severity of oral mucosal injury caused by high-dose chemotherapy.

Methods: The study used a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group design.

Changes in prosthetic screw stability because of misfit of implant-supported prostheses.

Purpose: The effect of two levels of prosthesis misfit on prosthetic screw stability was evaluated.

Materials And Methods: Two levels of vertical discrepancies--100 and 175 microns--were introduced between an implant-supported complete denture and the terminal abutment. An implant-supported complete denture without vertical discrepancy served as a control.
