This study assesses the concentrations of a range of antibiotics in riverine and transitional sediments in Ireland. A selection of 12 macrolide, fluoroquinolone, sulphonamide, and diaminopyrimidine antibiotics were quantified in 80 grab surficial sediment samples from around Ireland, selected to investigate areas of potentially higher pollution risk (agriculture, aquaculture, industrial emissions, and wastewater emission points) as well as isolated areas where there are no known pollution sources. Several of the macrolides and sulphonamides/trimethoprim were generally detected more frequently above limits of quantification (LoQ).

This single-center study administered MIJ821 (onfasprodil) as an intravenous infusion to healthy volunteers and included two parts: a single ascending dose study (Part 1) and a repeated intravenous dose study (Part 2). Primary objective was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of single ascending intravenous doses infused over a 40-min period and of two repeated doses (1 week apart) of MIJ821 in healthy volunteers. Secondary objectives were to assess the pharmacokinetics of MIJ821 after intravenous infusion in Part 1 and Part 2 of the study.

Pesticides are widely employed as a cost-effective means of reducing the impacts of undesirable plants and animals. The aim of this paper is to develop a risk ranking of transmission of key pesticides through soil to waterways, taking into account physico-chemical properties of the pesticides (soil half-life and water solubility), soil permeability, and the relationship between adsorption of pesticides and soil texture. This may be used as a screening tool for land managers, as it allows assessment of the potential transmission risks associated with the use of specified pesticides across a spectrum of soil textures.

Bauxite residue, the by-product produced in the alumina industry, is a potential low-cost adsorbent in the removal of phosphorus (P) from aqueous solution, due to its high composition of residual iron oxides such as hematite. Several studies have investigated the performance of bauxite residue in removing P; however, the majority have involved the use of laboratory "batch" tests, which may not accurately estimate its actual performance in filter systems. Spent hydroprocessing catalysts are known to contain a variety of potentially toxic metals and therefore studies on the bioavailability and mobility of these metals are critical for understanding the possible environmental risks of the spent catalysts. This study evaluates the different chemical fractions/forms of aluminium (Al), nickel (Ni), and molybdenum (Mo) in spent hydroprocessing catalyst and the changes they undergo during bioleaching with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. In the spent catalyst (prior to bioleaching), Al was primarily present in its residual form, suggesting its low environmental mobility.

Our study had two aims: to evaluate long-term trends in gastric adenocarcinoma in Japan over a period of 70 years, and to anticipate the future of gastric cancer in Japan, through comparison with data from the United States. To understand the relationship between structural properties of the β2-adrenoceptor ligands and their interactions with membranes, we have investigated the location and distribution of five β2 agonists with distinct clinical durations and onsets of action (indacaterol, two indacaterol analogues, salmeterol and formoterol) in monounsaturated model membranes using magic angle spinning NMR to measure these interactions through both H nuclear Overhauser enhancement (NOE) and paramagnetic relaxation enhancement (PRE) techniques. The hydrophilic aromatic groups of all five β2 agonists show maximum distribution in the lipid/water interface, but distinct location and dynamic behavior were observed for the lipophilic aromatic rings. Our study elucidates at atomic level that the hydrophobicity and substitution geometry of lipophilic groups play important roles in compound-lipid interactions.
