Siloxanes are molecules used extensively in commercial, industrial, and biomedical applications. The inclusion of short siloxane chains into phospholipids results in interesting physical properties, including the ability to form low polydispersity unilamellar vesicles. As such, hybrid siloxane phosphocholines (SiPCs) have been examined as a potential platform for the delivery of therapeutic agents.

Employing small angle X-ray scattering we have characterized SiPC bilayers. SiPCs exhibit differential self-assembly behaviour that results from the interplay between the siloxane fatty acid in the sn-2 position and the differing chain length fatty acids in the sn-1 position.

The current studies were undertaken to determine the susceptibility of human alveolar macrophages (AMs) to influenza A virus (IAV) infection in comparison with autologous peripheral blood-derived monocytes-macrophages (PBMs). AMs and PBMs were exposed to IAV in vitro and examined for their ability to bind and internalize IAV, and synthesize viral proteins and RNA. PBMs but not AMs demonstrated binding and internalization of the virus, synthesizing viral proteins and RNA.

However, few studies have directly assessed total antioxidant capacity (TAC) as a potential effect modifier of cardiac responses to increased ambient PM.

Moderately hydrophobic solvents with log P values in the range of 2-3 were more suitable than those at lower or higher log P values. Temperature had little effect on total conversion and yield of the oligoester macrocycles, except when a reaction temperature of 100 °C was employed.

Objective: We hypothesized that ozone exposure alters pulmonary and systemic vascular function, and cardiac function, with more pronounced effects in subjects with impaired antioxidant defense from deletion of the glutathione-S-transferase M1 gene (GSTM1 null).
Methods: Twenty-four young, healthy never-smoker subjects (12 GSTM1 null) inhaled filtered air, 100 ppb ozone and 200 ppb ozone for 3 h, with intermittent exercise, in a double-blind, randomized, crossover fashion.
Background: Both increases and decreases in ambient temperature have been associated with increased cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. However, the mechanism(s) remain unclear.
Objectives: We examined associations between biomarkers of pathways thought to, in part, explain these associations and changes in ambient temperature in a panel of predominantly post-myocardial infarction or post-stent patients.
Background: Diabetes may confer an increased risk for the cardiovascular health effects of particulate air pollution, but few human clinical studies of air pollution have included people with diabetes. Ultrafine particles (UFP, ≤100 nm in diameter) have been hypothesized to be an important component of particulate air pollution with regard to cardiovascular health effects.
Methods: 17 never-smoker subjects 30-60 years of age, with stable type 2 diabetes but otherwise healthy, inhaled either filtered air (0-10 particles/cm3) or elemental carbon UFP (~107 particles/cm3, ~50 ug/m3, count median diameter 32 nm) by mouthpiece, for 2 hours at rest, in a double-blind, randomized, crossover study design.
We have examined the chain length selectivity for a series of acyl donors by lipase B from Candida antarctica (CalB). CalB accepted aliphatic diesters of C4, C6 and C12 chain lengths equally. The introduction of a carbon-carbon double bond into the C4 esters dramatically lowered the rate constant associated with polymerization highlighting the role of geometry in catalysis; fumarate esters were polymerized at a reduced rate compared to the succinate esters, while the maleate esters were not polymerized above 5% over the course of 24h.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: We and others have shown that increases in particulate air pollutant (PM) concentrations in the previous hours and days have been associated with increased risks of myocardial infarction, but little is known about the relationships between air pollution and specific subsets of myocardial infarction, such as ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).
Methods: Using data from acute coronary syndrome patients with STEMI (n = 338) and NSTEMI (n = 339) and case-crossover methods, we estimated the risk of STEMI and NSTEMI associated with increased ambient fine particle (<2.5 um) concentrations, ultrafine particle (10-100 nm) number concentrations, and accumulation mode particle (100-500 nm) number concentrations in the previous few hours and days.

More and more enzymes are being explored as alternatives to conventional catalysts in chemical reactions. To utilize these biocatalysts to their fullest, it is incumbent on researchers to gain a complete understanding of the reaction conditions that particular enzymes will tolerate.
