Cryptococcal Osteomyelitis of the Patella: A Case Report.

Case: A 38-year-old woman presented to our clinic with right knee pain and difficulty ambulating. After cultures were obtained, a cryptococcal infection of the patella was identified. Subsequent workup revealed previously undiagnosed HIV/AIDS and a disseminated cryptococcal infection.

A Pivotal Role for Mycobactin/ in Growth and Adaptation of Mycobacterium abscessus.

Mycobacterium abscessus is an emerging pathogen that critically depends on iron for growth and pathogenesis. The acquisition of iron in Mycobacterium tuberculosis is governed by siderophores called mycobactins, synthesized by the gene cluster, but the role of this gene cluster in the adaption of M. abscessus to iron limitation is not characterized.

Rare atypical presentation of a polymicrobial gastropericardial fistula.

We present the unique case of a gastropericardial fistula with a rare, delayed presentation in a man in his 70s. Relevant surgeries include Watchman Left Atrial Appendage Closure device placement 1 year prior to arrival and gastric bypass surgery 20 years prior to arrival. The patient presented to the emergency department with weakness, diarrhoea and left knee pain.

Popliteal Artery Entrapment within a Tibial Plateau Fracture: A Case Report.

Case: Tibial plateau fractures can be associated with arterial injuries or dysvascular limbs, particularly in settings of trauma. Dysvascular limb in the setting of fracture is commonly due to dissection of the artery. Entrapment of the artery within the fracture is rare.

A Simplified and Efficient Method for Himar-1 Transposon Sequencing in Bacteria, Demonstrated by Creation and Analysis of a Saturated Transposon-Mutant Library in Mycobacterium abscessus.

We present a technically simple, easy-to-perform method for generating the genomic libraries for Himar-1 transposon site sequencing (Tn-seq). In addition to being simpler than present methods in the technical aspect, it also allows more robust and straightforward identification of the insertion site, by generating a longer sequence surrounding the insertion TA in the genome. The method makes Tn-seq more user-friendly and accessible to laboratories with more-limited bioinformatic resources.

Quadruple Versus Double Flexible Intramedullary Nails to Treat Pediatric Distal-third Tibial Shaft Fractures: A Biomechanical Comparison.

Background: The vast majority of pediatric distal-third tibial shaft fractures can be treated with closed reduction and casting. If conservative measures fail, then these fractures are usually treated with 2 antegrade flexible intramedullary nails. A postoperative cast is usually applied because of the tenuous fixation of the 2 nails.

Metal extraction from a deep eutectic solvent, an insight into activities.

The solvent extraction of gold, palladium, technetium, indium and rhenium from both mixtures of a deep eutectic solvent with aqueous salt solutions and of two different aqueous salt solutions has been performed. Initially using gold and then the other metals the solvent extraction results were interpreted using an activity coefficient/function equation (specific ion interaction theory). The most important presented result is the addition of a new term to the specific ion interaction theory equation.

Relative hemilabilities of HB(az) (az = pyrazolyl, dimethylpyrazolyl, methimazolyl) chelates in the complexes [M(η-CH)(CO){HB(az)}] (M = Mo, W).

The reactions of [M(η3-C3H5)Br(CO)2(NCMe)2] (M = Mo, W) or [Mo(η3-C3H5)Br(CO)2(PMe2Ph)2] with Na[H2B(mt)2] (mt = methimazolyl) affords the complexes [M(η3-C3H5)(CO)2{κ3-H,S,S'-H2B(mt)2}], the 3-centre, 2-electron B-H-M interaction of which was found to be inert with respect to opening under mild conditions, while more forcing conditions (heating with PMe2Ph) resulted in cleavage of the entire allyl and borate ligands to form [Mo(CO)3(PMe2Ph)3]. In contrast, the reaction of [Mo(η3-C3H5)Br(CO)2(NCMe)2] with Na[H2B(pz)2] affords either [Mo(η3-C3H5)(CO)2{κ3-H,N,N'-H2B(pz)2}] or (more likely) [Mo(η3-C3H5)(CO)2(NCMe){κ2-N,N'-H2B(pz)2}] which in turn reacts with phosphines to provide [[Mo(η3-C3H5)(CO)2(PPhR2){κ2-N,N'-H2B(pz)2}] (R = Me, Ph). The reactions discussed indicate the propensity for 3-centre, 2-electron B-H-Mo interactions increases in the order H2B(pz)2 < H2B(pz*)2 < H2B(mt)2 (pz* = 3,5-dimethypyrazolyl).

Synthesis and ligand substitution reactions of κ-B,S,S',S''-ruthenaboratranes.

A range of ruthenaboratranes of the form [Ru(CO)L{κ4-B,S,S',S''-B(mt)3}] (mt = N-methylmercaptoimidazolyl) have been prepared either by substitution of the PPh3 ligand in [Ru(CO)(PPh3){κ4-B,S,S',S''-B(mt)3}] by L (L = PMe2Ph, PMe3, P(OMe)3, P(OEt)3, P(OPh)3) or reactions of [RuCl(R)(CO)Ln] (R = Ph, CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHPh; n = 2, L = PCy3; n = 3, L = P(OMe)3, PMe2Ph) with Na[HB(mt)3].

Chronic Carpometacarpal Dislocation of the Thumb: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Case: We report a case of a chronic, irreducible carpometacarpal (CMC) dislocation of the thumb, which was managed with a trapeziometacarpal arthrodesis.

Conclusion: This case demonstrates that arthrodesis is a suitable salvage procedure for chronic, irreducible CMC dislocations of the thumb.

Chemical interaction between sea-salt and tellurium, between 300 and 1180 K.

As an emergency action during the Fukushima accident, seawater was used to maintain cooling. To evaluate the effect of the salt on fission-products, sodium chloride, and tellurium were heated together using different ratios in different atmospheres (inert or oxidizing) using thermogravimetric analysis. The experiment under inert conditions showed no indication of interaction.

Crystal structure and identification of resonance forms of diethyl 2-(3-oxoiso-1,3-di-hydro-benzo-furan-1-yl-idene)malonate.

The reaction of diethyl malonate with phthaloyl chloride in aceto-nitrile in the presence of tri-ethyl-amine and magnesium chloride results in the formation of the title compound, diethyl 2-(3-oxo-1,3-di-hydro-2-benzo-furan-1-yl-idene)propane-dioate, CHO. Dihydrobis(methimazolyl)borato complexes of ruthenium and osmium.

The reaction of Na[HB(mt)] (mt = 2-mercapto, 3-methylimidazol-1-yl, methimazolyl) with [Ru(X)Cl(CO)(PPh)] (n = 3 X = H; n = 2 BOCH, SiCl, SiMe) affords the complexes [Ru(X)(CO)(PPh){κ-H,S,S'-HB(mt)}]. Evidence is presented to also support the transient formation of [Ru(X)(CO)(PPh){κ-H,S,S'-HB(mt)}] (X = CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHPh, Ph) via a similar strategy, although these are unstable. The osmium complex [OsH(CO)(PPh){κ-H,S,S'-HB(mt)}] is similarly obtained from [OsHCl(CO)(PPh)] or [OsH(NCMe)(CO)(PPh)]BF.

The structures of CyMe4-BTBP complexes of americium(iii) and europium(iii) in solvents used in solvent extraction, explaining their separation properties.

Separation of trivalent actinoid (An(iii)) and lanthanoid (Ln(iii)) ions is extremely challenging due to their similar ionic radii and chemical properties. Poly-aromatic nitrogen compounds acting as tetradentate chelating ligands to the metal ions in the extraction, have the ability to sufficiently separate An(iii) from Ln(iii). One of these compounds, 6,6'-bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-benzol[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl)[2,2]bipyridine, CyMe4-BTBP, has proven to be resistant towards acidic environments and strong radiation from radioactive decomposition.

N-[2-(maleimido)ethyl]-3-(trimethylstannyl)benzamide, a molecule for radiohalogenation of proteins and peptides.

In this work a new coupling reagent, N-[2-(maleimido)ethyl]-3-(trimethylstannyl)benzamide, for radiohalogenation has been synthesized and characterized. The reagent is intended to either be attached to reduced disulfide bridges of proteins (making the halogenation site-specific) or to free terminal cysteine groups on peptides. The new reagent was also shown to be easily halogenated with inactive bromine and iodine as well as (125)I and (211)At, indicating potential use within targeted radiotherapy.

Investigations regarding the wet decontamination of fluorescent lamp waste using iodine in potassium iodide solutions.

With the rising popularity of fluorescent lighting, simple and efficient methods for the decontamination of discarded lamps are needed. Due to their mercury content end-of-life fluorescent lamps are classified as hazardous waste, requiring special treatment for disposal. A simple wet-based decontamination process is required, especially for streams where thermal desorption, a commonly used but energy demanding method, cannot be applied.

Crystal structure of a layered coordination polymer based on a 4(4) net containing Cd(2+) ions and 1,5-bis-(pyridin-4-yl)pentane linkers.

The title compound, poly[[di-aqua-bis-[1,5-bis-(pyridin-4-yl)pentane-κ(2) N:N']cadmium] bis-(perchlorate) 1,5-bis-(pyridin-4-yl)pentane ethanol mono-solvate], [Cd(C15H18N2)2(H2O)2](ClO4)2·C15H18N2·C2H6O, is a layered coordination polymer built up from highly squashed 4(4) nets in which the octa-hedral trans-CdO2N4 nodes (Cd site symmetry -1) are linked by the bifunctional ligands, forming infinite (110) sheets. The cationic sheets are charge-balanced by inter-layer perchlorate ions. A free 1,5-bis-(pyridin-4-yl)pentane mol-ecule and an ethanol mol-ecule of crystallization are also found in the inter-sheet region.

Treatment of an open medial tibiotalar dislocation with no associated fracture.

Tibiotalar dislocations without associated fractures are very uncommon in adults, and only a few studies have been published regarding this injury. More than 50% of these dislocations will be posteromedial, with a high incidence of open injuries, and 25% are pure posterior dislocations. In the present report, we discuss our experience and management of a medial tibiotalar dislocation with no associated fracture.

Recycling of high purity selenium from CIGS solar cell waste materials.

Copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) is a promising material in thin film solar cell production. To make CIGS solar cells more competitive, both economically and environmentally, in comparison to other energy sources, methods for recycling are needed. In addition to the generally high price of the material, significant amounts of the metals are lost in the manufacturing process.

Antimony leaching in plastics from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) with various acids and gamma irradiation.

There has been a recent interest in antimony since the availability in readily mined areas is decreasing compared to the amounts used. It is important in many applications such as flame retardants and in the production of polyester, which can trigger an investigation of the leachability of antimony from plastics using different acids. In this paper, different types of acids are tested for their ability to leach antimony from a discarded computer housing, made of poly(acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), which is a common plastic type used in electrical and electronic equipment.

An analysis of the composition and metal contamination of plastics from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

The compositions of three WEEE plastic batches of different origin were investigated using infrared spectroscopy, and the metal content was determined with inductively coupled plasma. The composition analysis of the plastics was based mainly on 14 samples collected from a real waste stream, and showed that the major constituents were high impact polystyrene (42 wt%), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (38 wt%) and polypropylene (10 wt%). Their respective standard deviations were 21.

A TRLFS study on the complexation of Cm(III) and Eu(III) with 4-t-butyl-6,6'-bis-(5,6-diethyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine in a water/2-propanol mixture.

The complexation of Cm(III) and Eu(III) with 4-t-butyl-6,6'-bis-(5,6-diethyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (t-Bu-C2-BTBP) in water/2-propanol solution is studied. With increasing ligand concentration, 1 : 2 complexes [M(t-Bu-C2-BTBP)(2)(H(2)O)](3+) form from the solvated metal ions. The stability constants are log K(Cm(III)) = 11.

Pharmacological characterization of harmaline-induced tremor activity in mice.

Harmaline-induced tremor in rodents is a model of essential tremor. We utilized a novel assay to quantify tremor activity in mice and found that tremor activity was dependent on harmaline dose. The first-line clinical essential tremor treatments propranolol, primidone and gabapentin and gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) significantly attenuated harmaline-induced tremor.
