Article Synopsis
  • - This study examined the pain response of methadone maintenance patients to additional opioids, specifically morphine, comparing their antinociceptive effects to those of matched control subjects.
  • - Results showed that methadone patients were hyperalgesic (more sensitive to pain) and achieved higher plasma morphine levels but experienced significantly less pain relief compared to controls, with effects ceasing immediately after morphine was infused.
  • - The study concluded that methadone patients may be cross-tolerant to morphine, indicating traditional morphine doses might not effectively manage acute pain in these individuals, prompting the need for further research on alternative pain management options.
