Intramedullary Antibiotic Delivery for Emphysematous Osteomyelitis of the Femur.

The authors present a case of bilateral femoral emphysematous osteomyelitis caused by Escherichia coli in a 60-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis who was receiving long-term prednisone therapy. The infection in both femoral shafts was eradicated with surgical debridement, followed by insertion of intramedullary rods composed of culture-specific antibiotic cement into the femoral canals in conjunction with 6 weeks of intravenous antibiotics. The rods were subsequently removed, and no signs of further osteomyelitis were recognized at follow-up.

Adverse Effects of Smoking on Musculoskeletal Health.

Smoking remains a prevalent part of present day society, with over 42 million Americans who continue to use cigarettes. Smoking is strongly associated with a variety of conditions that result in increased morbidity and mortality. Research also indicates that smoking has an adverse effect on surgical outcomes.

Use of over-the-scope clips (OTSC) for hemostasis in gastrointestinal bleeding in patients under antithrombotic therapy.

 In patients taking different regimens of antithrombotic and/or anticoagulant therapy, endoscopic management of gastrointestinal bleeding represents a major challenge due to failing endogenous hemostasis. In this retrospective study we report on success rates with the over-the-scope clip (OTSC) system in upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding in this high-risk patient population.  Between February 2011 and June 2014, 75 patients were treated with an OTSC for active gastrointestinal bleeding.

The Age of OrthoInfo: A Randomized Controlled Trial Evaluating Patient Comprehension of Informed Consent.

Background: Integral to an orthopaedic surgeon-patient informed consent discussion is the assessment of patient comprehension of their medical care. However, little is known about how to optimize patient comprehension of an informed consent discussion. The purpose of our study was to evaluate three time-controlled informed consent discussion methods to determine which optimized patient comprehension immediately after the discussion.

The prevalence of injury in Kendo.

Objective: Kendo is a Japanese martial art analogous to fencing, which is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. The large number of participants creates a need to assess injury patterns to better train them. The purpose of this study is to describe current injury rates in kendo and compare these rates to other martial arts.
