To minimize the radiation exposure of mostly young testicular cancer patients, it is essential to find out whether CT could be replaced by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the staging and follow-up of the patients. In this trial, we examined whether abdominal MRI is as effective as computed tomography (CT) in the detection of retroperitoneal metastases of testicular cancer. This prospective study included 50 patients, 46 cases of retroperitoneal metastases and 4 controls without abdominal metastases (mean age 33, 5 years, range 20-65 years).

To date, no clinical study has reported on the optimal treatment duration of PD-1 blockade in patients with metastatic melanoma. Worldwide, concern has been expressed that due to the high cost of anti-PD-1 therapy, it is not available for all patients. After approval of anti-PD-1 therapy as a first-line treatment, the Helsinki University Hospital institutional board for new drugs decided to treat the first patient cohort within a limited treatment duration program in order to offer this treatment to as many patients as possible.

Metastatic melanomas are hypervascular tumours with poor prognosis. We hypothesized that treatment of metastatic melanoma with a combination of bevacizumab, a monoclonal antibody against vascular endothelial growth factor, dacarbazine (DTIC) and low-dose interferon alpha-2a (IFN-alpha2a) might lead to a synergistic inhibition of angiogenesis and regression of tumours. Patients with metastatic melanoma were treated with bevacizumab (5 mg/kg every 2 weeks), DTIC (200 mg/m days 1-5 every 4 weeks) and IFN-alpha2a (three MIU subcutaneously daily from day 15 onwards).
