Tightly controlled interactions between structural and immune cells are required to maintain lung homeostasis. Here, we use single-cell transcriptomics to chart the cellular landscape of upper and lower airways and lung parenchyma in healthy lungs, and lower airways in asthmatic lungs.

Chronic exposure to farm environments is a risk factor for nonallergic lung disease. This study was performed in an inbred Th2-predisposed "asthma prone" rat strain (brown Norway [BN]) and in an outbred nonpredisposed strain (Sprague Dawley [SD]), to differentiate between genetic and environmental factors.
