Impact of intraoperative fluoroscopic beam positioning relative to the hip and pelvis on perceived acetabular component position.

Background: Parallax is poorly understood and can mislead surgeons using intraoperative fluoroscopy (IF) to guide cup placement during anterior approach (AA) total hip arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to examine how changes in fluoroscopic beam positioning in relation to the hip and pelvis affects the projected acetabular image.

Methods: An acetabular component was positioned in an anatomic pelvis model in 45° and 20° of abduction and anteversion, respectively using a computer assisted cup targeting system.

Can obese patients undergo simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty without an increased risk of perioperative complications?

Simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty (simBTKA) remains controversial, especially in obese patients. Therefore, this retrospective study compared six month perioperative complications in 313 simBTKA patients. Comparison groups included 139 non-obese patients (BMI < 30), 61 obese patients (BMI = 30-35) and 48 severely obese patients (BMI > 35).

Denosumab-Associated Peri-Implant Atypical Femur Fracture: A Case Report.

Bisphosphonate use has been associated with atypical pathologic fracture and slowed bone turnover. We present a case of a bisphosphonate-associated peri-implant atypical femur fracture following use of a recon nail for treatment of a prior bisphosphonate-associated atypical femur fracture.

Management of Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis: The Hawai'i Experience.

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a growing problem amongst children in Hawai'i as well as throughout the world. With increasing rates of childhood obesity, SCFEs are affecting more patients at younger ages. This makes the treatment of SCFEs critical as many children with SCFEs have significant growth remaining.
