- The study evaluates the effectiveness of Italy's pre-participation screening program using 12-lead ECG to identify hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in young athletes, a major cause of sudden death.
- Out of 4,450 screened athletes, none were found to have clinically apparent HCM; however, other cardiac issues were detected in a small number of athletes.
- The findings indicate that the screening program is effective for HCM detection and suggest that routine echocardiography may not be necessary for broad screening efforts.
