  • The study investigates the link between sleep quality and daytime sleepiness with fall risk in older adults aged 75 and above.
  • Conducted in Italy, the research assessed 206 participants using sleep quality metrics and fall risk evaluations, revealing that a significant number had poor sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how sex differences affect sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in older adults (aged 65+), as current understanding is primarily based on younger populations.
  • Involving 226 participants (69.5% women), it found that many elderly individuals (64.2%) reported poor sleep quality, with an initial finding that men were half as likely as women to have poor sleep.
  • However, when adjustments for cognitive status and mood were made, the differences in sleep quality between men and women were no longer significant, indicating that cognitive and emotional factors play a role in sleep issues among the elderly.

  • Recent heart failure (HF) guidelines emphasize early initiation and rapid adjustment of medical therapies for patients with reduced ejection fraction to lower the chances of rehospitalization and death.
  • * For elderly patients, this intensive approach may not be practical due to frailty, multiple health issues, and risks of negative side effects, along with a lack of effective monitoring during treatment adjustments.
  • * In patients with preserved ejection fraction, sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors have shown benefits for reducing hospitalizations and cardiovascular deaths, but their effectiveness in certain heart conditions remains untested due to the absence of relevant clinical trials.

Nowadays, more studies deal with "OrthoGeriatrics", for the co-management of elderly patients suffering fractures, from the admission to the discharge and beyond. For the first time at Cagliari University Hospital, we introduced an orthogeriatric service, in which trained geriatricians stay in orthopedic unit alongside trained orthopedics. The primary aim of the study was to analyze the rate of death and rehospitalization in elderly femur-fractured people of 65 or more years of age, identifying possible predictive factors.
