The success of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) therapy is hampered by complications such as thrombosis and bleeding. Understanding blood flow interactions between the heart and the LVAD might help optimize treatment and decrease complication rates. We hypothesized that LVADs modify shear stresses and blood transit in the left ventricle (LV) by changing flow patterns and that these changes can be characterized using 2D echo color Doppler velocimetry (echo-CDV).

Article Synopsis
  • Stroke is a major risk for patients with Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) due to altered blood flow patterns in the heart, leading to potential blood clot formation.
  • Research using time-resolved stereo particle image velocimetry investigated how LVAD speed, peripheral resistance, and afterload affect intraventricular flow in a LVAD-implanted model.
  • The findings revealed that while increasing LVAD speed can boost flow, it doesn't necessarily decrease stagnation zones associated with clot risk, although activating the pulsatility mode during operation effectively reduced the size of these stagnation areas.
