Growing interest has recently been shown in Tepary beans () because they contain lectins and protease inhibitors that have been shown to have a specific cytotoxic effect on human cancer cells. Bean lectins offer protection against biotic and abiotic stress factors, so it is possible that mechanical foliar damage may increase lectin production. The present study reports two cases of oral perineuriomas, including a clinicopathologic review of the 39 published cases (17 intraneural and 22 extraneural perineuriomas) in the English language literature. In the first case, the tumor occurred in an 84-year-old male as a painless, asymptomatic, 20-mm submucosal nodule on the right lower mucobuccal fold near to the premolar area. In the second case, a 46-year-old female presented with a painless, 25-mm, slow-growing, fibrous, pedunculated nodule on the right buccal mucosa.

The global prevalence of HIV infection in the female population presents a significant healthcare burden in terms of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of the disease. This review aims to discuss current trends and treatment guidelines for the use of antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy and associated complications in this population. Historically, antiretroviral monotherapy with zidovudine was commonly used for preventing MTCT, and monotherapy with single-dose nevirapine is still used for prevention in resource-limited settings.

We identified the protein components of a protein-bound polysaccharide (PSK) that are responsible for the biological function of this immunomodulator in its interaction with NKL cells, an NK-derived cell line previously known to be activated by this extract, obtained from the basidiomycete Coriolus versiocolor. In addition, we show that PSK protein interacts with NKL cells through a different receptor from that used by IL-2. This was deduced from the different molecular weights of the PSK/NKL and IL-2/NKL receptor complexes.

Previous reports from our group indicated that the MHC class I phenotype of metastatic lung colonies produced by a mouse fibrosarcoma tumor clone (B9) were, depending on the immune status of the host, MHC class I negative in immunocompetent mice and MHC class I positive in immunodeficient athymic nude/nude mice. Now we report the identification of the molecular alterations responsible for the changes of MHC class I molecules in both situations. Metastatic nodes were analyzed for the mRNA level of H-2 class I and beta2-microglobulin genes, and several gene components of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I antigen-processing machinery (APM).

The activation of natural killer (NK) cells and induction of cytotoxicity are complex processes whose molecular mechanisms have not been clearly elucidated. Stimulation of the NKL human NK cell line with interleukin-2 (IL-2) or protein-bound polysaccharide K (PSK) leads to sustained growth and cytolytic activity in comparison to unstimulated NKL cells. Our previous results shown that IL-2 and PSK regulate different nuclear transcription factors in NKL cells, and that the signal transduction pathway used by these inducers is different.
