Caring for a visually impaired child can affect the caregiver's income and, in turn, the family's. Catastrophic spending resulting from increased expenses and reduced income must be taken into account, whether due to unemployment, a reduction in the number of hours worked or the difficulty of entering or reentering the job market. Given this scenario, the main objective of this study was to estimate the catastrophic spending attributed to the caregiver of blind or low-vision children in reference centers for education for the blind, ophthalmology and child health located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, identifying which factors are associated with a higher or lower prevalence of this expenditure.

Objectives: Identify, through a systematic review, the main domains and methods to support health technology assessment of Medical Devices (MD) from the perspective of technological incorporation into healthcare systems.

Methods: Performed structured searches in MEDLINE, Embase, BVS, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for full studies published between 2017 and May 2023. Selection, extraction, and quality assessment were performed by two blinded reviewers, and discrepancies were resolved by a third reviewer.

Background: Multidimensional health-related quality of life (HRQOL) instruments, such as the EQ-5D, are increasingly used to assess inequalities in health. However, it is necessary to explore the ability of these instruments to capture differences between population groups, especially in low/middle-income countries. This study aimed to investigate whether the EQ-5D-3L instrument can detect differences in HRQOL between groups of different socioeconomic status (SES) in Brazil.

Brazil has the second largest number of leprosy cases (a disease with a significant burden) in the world. Despite global and local efforts to eliminate this public health problem, inadequate or late diagnosis contribute to perpetuate its transmission, especially among household contacts. Tests such as the rapid IgM antibody detection (RT) and real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were developed to overcome the challenges of early diagnosis of leprosy.

We aimed to identify the reports of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress among caregivers of children without visual impairment, with low vision, and with blindness and their relationship with the degree of social, emotional, material, and affective support. This cross-sectional and multicenter study was conducted in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 2019 to 2020. A questionnaire was applied to obtain caregivers' sociodemographic and economic data.

Article Synopsis
  • Thromboprophylaxis with rivaroxaban 10 mg/day for 35 days after COVID-19 hospitalization significantly reduces thrombotic events in high-risk patients compared to no anticoagulation.
  • A decision tree analysis based on the MICHELLE trial data showed that treating patients with rivaroxaban resulted in a cost of $53.37 per patient, compared to $34.22 for no treatment, with a small incremental cost difference of $19.15.
  • The estimated incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of $5385.52 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) indicates that extended rivaroxaban treatment is a cost-effective option for these patients.

Introduction: Patient-Reported Outcomes (PRO) are directly reported by the patient without interpretation of the patient's response by a clinician or anyone else and pertains to the patient's health, quality of life, or functional status associated with health care or treatment. It can provide patients' perspectives regarding treatment benefit and harm beyond survival and are often the outcomes of most importance to patients. This study aims to describe and analyze outcomes reported by Brazilian women diagnosed with breast cancer and rank the most important attributes for these patients.

Objectives: To prevent thrombotic events after angioplasty, current guidelines recommend dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and thienopyridine. Clopidogrel is the only thienopyridine currently available in the Brazilian National Health System. The purpose of this study was to determine the cost-effectiveness of prasugrel, an alternative thienopyridine, compared with clopidogrel in patients with acute coronary syndrome and diabetes mellitus who underwent angioplasty.

Objectives: Several trials have demonstrated the benefit of the CDK 4/6 inhibitors for postmenopausal women with luminal advanced breast cancer. This research aims to compare the cost-utility of the CDK 4/6 inhibitors in patients with no history of resistance to endocrine therapy.

Methods: A Markov model was constructed to estimate the incremental cost per quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) of treatments from the Brazilian public health system perspective over a lifetime horizon (30 years) with 5% annual discount rate for both benefits and costs.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the cost-utility of the Oxford, CoronaVac, and Janssen COVID-19 vaccines from the perspective of the Brazilian public health system.

Methods: A total of 3 microsimulation models were constructed with individual data to evaluate the 3 vaccines. The simulation contains 7 transition states that are related to the natural history of the disease.

Objective: To perform a first cost-utility analysis of eculizumab for the treatment of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria from the perspective of the Brazilian Unified Health System.

Methods: A Markov decision model was developed for 35-year-old patients with symptomatic paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. We used a cycle length of one month and a time horizon of 20 years.

Introduction: The lack of availability of the Therasuit Method by the Unified Health System associated with its high cost has led to the prosecution of this treatment. The study aimed to outline the profile of this judicialization, as well as to estimate the direct costs resulting from compliance with the deferred judicial decisions.

Method: Weanalyzed the cases submitted to the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro between January 2013 and January 2017, in which the Therasuit Method was applied.

The aim of this study was to perform a budget impact analysis on the adoption of percutaneous occlusion of ostium secundum atrial septal defects in the Brazilian Unified National Health System. Costs were collected using micro-costing technique from medical records for each treatment technique (conventional surgery versus percutaneous septal occluder) at a public federal hospital specialized in high-complexity cardiology. The analysis showed that expenditures associated with percutaneous occlusion were lower than with conventional surgery, and sensitivity analysis confirmed the cost reduction in several scenarios, showing a significant budget impact with a 30% adoption rate for the percutaneous occluder (savings of approximately 1.

Objectives: The study performs a cost-effectiveness analysis of procedures for atrial septal defects occlusion, comparing conventional surgery to septal percutaneous implant.

Methods: A model of analytical decision was structured with symmetric branches to estimate cost-effectiveness ratio between the procedures. The decision tree model was based on evidences gathered through meta-analysis of literature, and validated by a panel of specialists.
