Article Synopsis
  • Chronic ethanol (EtOH) exposure inhibits neurogenesis in the hippocampus, but the effects of acute EtOH and cannabinoids on this process are less understood, especially since their combined use is becoming common among users.
  • In a study with adult male Wistar rats, various cannabinoid receptor agonists and antagonists were tested alongside an acute binge dose of EtOH to observe their effects on neurogenesis.
  • The results indicated that both EtOH and the CB1R agonist reduced DCX-positive neurons and increased cell death markers, while CB1R antagonists could reverse these effects, suggesting that activation of CB1R plays a role in acute EtOH-induced neurogenesis inhibition.
