The molecular mechanisms connecting cellular metabolism with differentiation remain poorly understood. Here, we find that metabolic signals contribute to stem cell differentiation and germline homeostasis during Drosophila melanogaster spermatogenesis. We discovered that external citrate, originating outside the gonad, fuels the production of Acetyl-coenzyme A by germline ATP-citrate lyase (dACLY).

Article Synopsis
  • Reactive oxygen species, especially hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), are crucial for signaling in cellular processes, particularly in the symbiotic relationship between Medicago truncatula and Sinorhizobium meliloti.
  • A transcriptome analysis on M. truncatula’s roots revealed 301 genes influenced by ROS levels, including MtSpk1, a gene related to protein kinase that responds to both H(2)O(2) and nodulation factors.
  • Downregulating MtSpk1 with artificial micro-RNA hindered the establishment of symbiosis, indicating its significant role in the interaction with rhizobia.
