The perinatal period is suffused with profound upheaval and physical and psychological changes, and is accompanied by frequent psychopathological and psychiatric disorders. The early management of mother-child relationships during this period is therefore a major and complex issue, both for professionals and for patients. Two main pitfalls would be to distinguish the taking into account of the subject's suffering from the risk of early alteration of the parent-baby relationship, and to separate the psychological and physical dimensions at stake.

Vicarious trauma evokes a state of post-traumatic stress in caregivers confronted with the trauma endured by a patient. Compassion fatigue is manifested by a gradual erosion of empathy, optimism and compassion.
