According to textbooks, no physical observable can be discerned allowing to distinguish a liquid from a gas beyond the critical point. Yet, several proposals have been put forward challenging this view and various transition boundaries between a gas-like and a liquid-like behaviour, including the so-called Widom and Frenkel lines, and percolation line, have been suggested to delineate the supercritical state space. Here we report observation of a crossover from gas-like (Gaussian) to liquid-like (Lorentzian) self-dynamic structure factor by incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements on supercritical fluid methane as a function of pressure, along the 200 K isotherm.

Hydrogen and helium saturate the 1D pore systems of the high-silica (Si/Al>30) zeolites Theta-One (TON), and Mobile-Twelve (MTW) at high pressure based on x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and Monte Carlo simulations. In TON, a strong 22 % volume increase occurs above 5 GPa with a transition from the collapsed P2 to a symmetrical, swelled Cmc2 form linked to an increase in H content from 12 H/unit cell in the pores to 35 H/unit cell in the pores and in the framework of the material. No transition and continuous collapse of TON is observed in helium indicating that the mechanism of H insertion is distinct from other fluids.

Appropriate diagnoses of parasites of apex marine predators are crucial to understand their biodiversity, host specificity, biogeography, and life cycles. Such diagnoses are also informative of ecological and biological characteristics of both host and environment in which the hosts and their parasites live. We here (i) investigate the parasite fauna of a bluntnose sixgill shark Hexanchus griseus (Bonnaterre, 1788) obtained from the Gulf of Naples (Tyrrhenian Sea), (ii) characterize molecularly all its metazoan parasites, and (iii) resurrect and report the main morphological features and phylogenetic position of Grillotia acanthoscolex, a cestode species previously synonymized with Grillotia adenoplusia.

While it is widely recognized that purely organic molecular systems with multiple bonds undergo chemical condensation at sufficiently high pressures (from tenths to tens of GPa), the fate of organometallics at extreme conditions remains largely underexplored. We have investigated the high pressure (up to 41 GPa) chemical transformations in a simple molecular system known as nickelocene, (C5H5)2Ni, which serves as a representative example of a class of organometallics called sandwich compounds. Nickelocene decomposed above 13 GPa, at room temperature, while lower pressure thresholds have been observed at higher temperatures (295-573 K).

While polymeric carbon monoxide (pCO) has been experimentally found to remain amorphous and undecomposed at room temperature up to 50 GPa, the question of whether crystalline counterparts of it can be obtained naturally raises. From different computational studies, it can be inferred that either the crystallization of amorphous pCO (a-pCO) or its decomposition into a mixture of CxOy suboxides (x > y) or carbon and CO2 may occur. In this study, we report experimental investigations of the high temperature (700-4000 K) transformation of a-pCO in the 47-120 GPa pressure range, conducted by x-ray diffraction in laser heated diamond anvil cells.

The cestode family Gymnorhynchidae Dollfus, 1935 (Trypanorhyncha) comprises three genera and six valid species that are typically intestinal parasites of large pelagic sharks. Members of Gymnorhynchidae show a wide geographic distribution and represent a global sanitary concern because as larvae they infect the edible flesh of several commercially important fishes with some species having allergenic potential. We investigated the structure of parasite communities of three sympatric shark species (Etmopterus spinax, Galeus melastomus, and Scyliorhinus canicula) and explored both the influence of host features in shaping the communities and their role as biological indicators of environment stability in the Gulf of Naples (central Mediterranean Sea), a geographical area characterized by strong anthropic pressure.
