Background: Accurately determining the age and survival probabilities of adult mosquitoes is crucial for understanding parasite transmission, evaluating the effectiveness of control interventions and assessing disease risk in communities. This study was aimed at demonstrating the rapid identification of epidemiologically relevant age categories of Anopheles funestus, a major Afro-tropical malaria vector, through the innovative combination of infrared spectroscopy and machine learning, instead of the cumbersome practice of dissecting mosquito ovaries to estimate age based on parity status.

Methods: Anopheles funestus larvae were collected in rural south-eastern Tanzania and reared in an insectary.

However, there is precious little information about the local molecular packing in supercooled liquids, meaning that the order parameter of the transition is still unknown.

A Novel Multimodal Cognitive Interaction for Walker-Assisted Rehabilitation Therapies.

This work presents a multimodal cognitive interaction strategy aiming at walker-assisted rehabilitation therapies, with special focus on post-stroke patients. Such interaction strategy is based on monitoring user's gait and face orientation to command the displacement of the smart walker. Users are able to actively command the steering of the walker by changing their face orientation, while their lower limbs movement affect the walker's linear velocity.

One-day workshop-based training improves physical activity prescription knowledge in Latin American physicians: a pre-test post-test study.

Background: The physical inactivity pandemic and related non-communicable diseases have made it imperative for medical doctors (MDs) to effectively provide lifestyle counseling as part of prevention and treatment plans for patients. A one-day certification workshop was designed to improve MDs PA prescription knowledge, as part of the Exercise is Medicine® (EIM®) global health initiative. The objective was to determine knowledge gain of MDs participating in a standardized, one-day PA prescription workshop performed throughout Latin America (LA).

Effects of awareness interventions on children's attitudes toward peers with a visual impairment.

The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of two awareness programs (6-day vs. 1-day programs) on children's attitudes toward peers with a visual impairment. Three hundred and forty-four Spanish physical education students (164 girls and 180 boys) aged 10-15 years, took part in the study.

Respiratory symptoms among waste-picking child laborers: a cross-sectional study.

This study evaluates respiratory symptoms, lung function, and exposure to airborne particles among waste-picking children. We enrolled 103 waste-picking children at a dump in Managua, Nicaragua and 103 children who do not pick waste. Exposure to airborne particles was assessed by area sampling.

Necrotizing ulcerative periodontal diseases in children and young adults in Medellín, Colombia, 1965--2000.

Previous findings that necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG) is a precursor to noma or cancrum oris were confirmed by the follow-up of these clinical conditions in a study of 45 Colombian patients: necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG, n = 29), necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis (NUP, n = 7) and noma (n = 9). Patients were diagnosed at the outpatient clinic of the School of Dentistry at the University of Antioquia, at the University Hospital Saint Vincent of Paul, at the Luz Castro de Gutierrez University Hospital, at the Red Cross Hospital and at the private office of one of the authors (Jiménez L., M) in Medellín, Colombia, from 1965 until 2000.
