The adult females of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are facultative hematophagous insects but they are unable to feed on blood right after pupae emergence. The maturation process that takes place during the first post-emergence days, hereafter named hematophagic and gonotrophic capacitation, comprises a set of molecular and physiological changes that prepare the females for the first gonotrophic cycle. Notwithstanding, the molecular bases underlying mosquito hematophagic and gonotrophic capacitation remain obscure.

Despite the importance of fat body in metabolism of arthropods, studies in ticks are scarce. This study evaluated the lipid composition and activation of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) enzymes in Rhipicephalus microplus fat body after infection with different isolates of the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae sensu lato (Metschnikoff, 1879) Sorokin, 1883. The isolates CG 32, GC 112, GC 148, GC 347, and GC 629 were inoculated as viable or non-viable conidia in the ticks.

Chagas disease is a severe illness, which can lead to death if the patients are not promptly treated. The disease is caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which is mostly transmitted by a triatomine insect vector. There are 8-10 million people infected with T.

Background: Arthropod-borne diseases are some of the most rapidly spreading diseases. Reducing the vector population is currently the only effective way to reduce case numbers. Central metabolic pathways are potential targets to control vector populations, but have not been well explored to this aim.

Background: Anopheles aquasalis is a major malaria vector in coastal areas of South and Central America where it breeds preferentially in brackish water. This species is very susceptible to Plasmodium vivax and it has been already incriminated as responsible vector in malaria outbreaks. There has been no high-throughput investigation into the sequencing of An.

The bloodsucking hemipteran Rhodnius prolixus is a vector of Chagas' disease, which affects 7-8 million people today in Latin America. In contrast to other hematophagous insects, the triatomine gut is compartmentalized into three segments that perform different functions during blood digestion. Here we report analysis of transcriptomes for each of the segments using pyrosequencing technology.

Phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of protein tyrosine residues constitutes a major biochemical regulatory mechanism for the cell. We report a transient increase in the total tyrosine phosphorylation of the Aedes aegypti head during the first days after emergence from the pupal stage. This correlates with an initial reduction in total head protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) activity.

Lipid transport in arthropods is achieved by highly specialized lipoproteins, which resemble those described in vertebrate blood. Here, we describe purification and characterization of the lipid-apolipoprotein complex, lipophorin (Lp), in the malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae. We also describe the Lp-mediated lipid transfer to developing eggs and the distribution of the imported lipid in developing embryos.
