The sex of an animal impacts glucose sensitivity, but little information is available regarding the mechanisms causing that difference, especially during acute inflammation. We examined sex-specific differences in the role of the P2Y receptor (P2YR) in glucose flux with and without LPS challenge. Male and female wild-type and P2YR knockout mice (P2YR) were injected with LPS or saline and glucose tolerance tests (GTT) were performed.

Background: Salmonella can cause asymptomatic infections, diarrhea, bacteremia and focal infections such as meningitis and osteomyelitis.

Aim: To describe clinical and microbiological aspects of infections by Salmonella spp. in children in a pediatric referral hospital: Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell, in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Mounting evidence suggests that human motor control uses dynamic primitives, attractors of dynamic neuromechanical systems that require minimal central supervision. However, advantages for control may be offset by compromised versatility. Extending recent results showing that humans could not sustain discrete movements as duration decreased, this study tested whether smoothly rhythmic movements could be maintained as duration increased.

How the human brain controls hand movements to carry out different tasks is still debated. The concept of synergy has been proposed to indicate functional modules that may simplify the control of hand postures by simultaneously recruiting sets of muscles and joints. However, whether and to what extent synergic hand postures are encoded as such at a cortical level remains unknown.

Within the past several decades, dramatic changes have been made in the field of diagnostic imaging. Many of these changes have been with ultrasound, which has been transformative in the efficiency and accuracy of diagnostics. Emergency physicians, intensivists, and other acute care clinicians are using and relying on critical care ultrasound imaging to better triage and diagnose patients at the point of care.

Given the vast complexity of human actions and interactions with objects, we proposed that control of sensorimotor behavior may utilize dynamic primitives. However, greater computational simplicity may come at the cost of reduced versatility. Evidence for primitives may be garnered by revealing such limitations.

Purpose: To find the factors which influence the acute increment of International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) after transperineal permanent interstitial implant (TPI) using (125)I seeds.

Patients And Methods: From April 2004 through September 2006, 104 patients with nonmetastatic prostate cancer underwent TPI without external-beam irradiation. Median patient age was 70 years with a median follow-up of 13.

The details and technical resources used in changing subglandular implants with fibrous capsules to the submuscular plane are described. A simple technique is proposed involving explantation followed by a partial capsulectomy that leaves in its place a patch from its deep plane that is adherent to the pectoralis muscle. This patch can be used as an access to the retromuscular space with no injury to the muscle.

Protein fibril formation is implicated in many diseases, and therefore much effort has been focused toward the development of inhibitors of this process. In a previous project, a monomeric protein was computationally engineered to bind itself and form a heterodimer complex following interfacial redesign. One of the protein monomers, termed monomer-B, was unintentionally destabilized and shown to form macroscopic fibrils.

An infertile couple whose female partner showed recurrent retrieval of immature metaphase I (MI) oocytes that were resistant to in-vitro maturation, was studied. Four spermiograms revealed teratozoospermia. Consistent non-fertilization and negative pregnancy outcomes were obtained after intrauterine insemination, gamete intra-Fallopian transfer and IVF.

Reconstruction of the eye socket.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

October 2001

Ten cases of irradiated and exenterated orbits in retinoblastoma patients were treated for reconstruction of the eye socket. The follow-up was from 1 to 5 years, with no retraction of the treated area and without sequels of the donor site. The author finds that this pathology is a new and precise indication for the grafted temporofascial island flap described by Dr.

Rehabilitation of trans-humeral amputees represents a challenge. One of the difficulties to overcome is prosthetic suspension. In the case of elbow disarticulation the presence of humeral condyles permits better suspension, but there is no room for elbow joints, particularly electronic ones, and the only available mechanisms are provided by external hinges.

The effects of media composition on growth parameters, total protein production (including delta-endotoxin) and its relation to the biological properties ofBacillus thuringiensis var.israelensis was investigated. The replacement of glucose by glycerol as the carbon source yielded higher concentrations of delta-endotoxin.

Bipolar coagulation for hemostasis should be used more frequently than monopolar coagulation in aesthetic plastic surgery. The advantages of the procedure are manifold: considerable reduction of the amount of current, and consequent prevention of deleterious effects on other tissues and organs; minimal devitalization of tissues during coagulation; reduction of reactive edema; total separation of the patient from the power source when coagulating forceps are not in use; avoidance of burns due to defective insulation of conductors; elimination of "spark" burns of the surgeon's fingers through punctured gloves; and freedom of the assistants' hands for other duties.

The operation for the forehead lift is reviewed considering the experience acquired in recent years in order to facilitate its safe execution. Particular attention is given to the removal of factors limiting the free upward movement of the frontal flap, such as preparation of the meso temporalis. The treatment of the muscular layer is updated and a number of safety measures are proposed to prevent any undue damage to the blood and nervous supply of the region.
