BACKGROUNDEarly antiretroviral therapy initiation (ARTi) in HIV-1 restricts reservoir size and diversity while preserving immune function, potentially improving opportunities for immunotherapeutic cure strategies. For antibody-based cure approaches, the development of autologous neutralizing antibodies (anAbs) after acute/early ARTi is relevant but is poorly understood.METHODSWe characterized antibody responses in a cohort of 23 participants following ARTi in acute HIV (<60 days after acquisition) and early HIV (60-128 days after acquisition).

Breast cancer mortality results from incurable recurrences thought to be seeded by dormant, therapy-refractory residual tumor cells (RTCs). Understanding the mechanisms enabling RTC survival is therefore essential for improving patient outcomes. Here, we derive a dormancy-associated RTC signature that mirrors the transcriptional response to neoadjuvant therapy in patients and is enriched for extracellular matrix-related pathways.

Introduction: Correct tip positioning is a critical aspect in central vascular access devices insertion. The verification of positioning at the cavo-atrial junction is usually performed by intracavitary electrocardiography. Recently, echocardiographic techniques were proposed, including the direct visualization of the catheter or the visualization of a saline/air bolus (i.

We report on collective excitable events in a highly diluted random network of non-excitable nodes. Excitability arises thanks to a self-sustained local adaptation mechanism that drives the system on a slow timescale across a hysteretic phase transition involving states with different degrees of synchronization. These phenomena have been investigated for the Kuramoto model with bimodal distribution of the natural frequencies and for the Kuramoto model with inertia and a unimodal frequency distribution.

In 2019 a newly identified coronavirus, designated as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread rapidly from the epicenter in Wuhan (China) to more than 150 countries around the world, causing the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In this study, we describe an extraction-less method based on reverse transcriptase loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) intended for the rapid qualitative detection of nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2 in upper respiratory specimens, including oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal swabs, anterior nasal and mid-turbinate nasal swabs, nasopharyngeal washes/aspirates or nasal aspirates as well as bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) from individuals suspected of COVID-19 by their healthcare provider. The assay's performance was evaluated and compared to an RT quantitative PCR-based assay (FDA-approved).

The superradiant amplification in the scattering from a rotating medium was first elucidated by Sir Roger Penrose over 50 years ago as a means by which particles could gain energy from rotating black holes. Despite this fundamental process being ubiquitous also in wave physics, it has only been observed once experimentally, in a water tank. Here, we measure this amplification for a nonlinear optics experiment in the superfluid regime.

Antibodies targeting Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) of SARS-CoV-2 have been suggested to account for the majority of neutralizing activity in COVID-19 convalescent sera and several neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) have been isolated, characterized and proposed as emergency therapeutics in the form of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). However, SARS-CoV-2 variants are rapidly spreading worldwide from the sites of initial identification. The variants of concern (VOC) B.

Population bursts in a large ensemble of coupled elements result from the interplay between the local excitable properties of the nodes and the global network topology. Here, collective excitability and self-sustained bursting oscillations are shown to spontaneously emerge in globally coupled populations of nonexcitable units subject to adaptive coupling. The ingredients to observe collective excitability are the coexistence of states with different degrees of synchronization joined to a global feedback acting, on a slow timescale, against the synchronization (desynchronization) of the oscillators.

Dynamical systems with long-delay feedback can exhibit complicated temporal phenomena, which once reorganized in a two-dimensional space are reminiscent of spatiotemporal behavior. In this framework, a normal forms description has been developed to reproduce the dynamics, and the opportunity to treat the corresponding variables as true space and time has since been established. However, recently, an alternative approach has been proposed [F.

Global pandemics call for large and diverse healthcare data to study various risk factors, treatment options, and disease progression patterns. Despite the enormous efforts of many large data consortium initiatives, scientific community still lacks a secure and privacy-preserving infrastructure to support auditable data sharing and facilitate automated and legally compliant federated analysis on an international scale. Existing health informatics systems do not incorporate the latest progress in modern security and federated machine learning algorithms, which are poised to offer solutions.

Background And Aims: Despite anticoagulation, usually with heparin, mortality for thromboembolic events in COVID-19 remains high. Clinical efficacy of heparin is due to its interaction with antithrombin (AT) that may be decreased in COVID-19. Therefore, we correlated AT levels with outcomes of COVID-19.

The Vaccine Safety Net's Web Analytics Project (VSN-WAP) was launched in October 2017 to monitor the behavior of users visiting websites belonging to the VSN, a global network of websites providing science-based information on vaccine safety. Participating websites could provide web metrics in two ways: through a Google Analytics (GA) script, which automatically forwarded metrics to a central account and through manual input (MI) of a reduced subset of metrics (Sessions, Page Views, New Users, Bounce Rate, Views/Session and Average Session Duration), which were pooled with the metrics obtained through GA. Additional metrics were obtained from websites providing data through Google Analytics (Country, Age, Sex, Device).

Excitable waves arise in many spatially extended systems of either a biological, chemical, or physical nature due to the interplay between local reaction and diffusion processes. Here we demonstrate that similar phenomena are encoded in the time dynamics of an excitable system with two, hierarchically long delays. The transition from 1D localized structures to curved wave segments is experimentally observed in an excitable semiconductor laser with two feedback loops and reproduced by numerical simulations of a prototypical model.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at patients with mild heart valve issues but no symptoms, to see who might need surgery and when.
  • They tracked 276 patients over about 3.5 years and found that certain heart measurements could predict if someone would have problems later, like heart failure or strokes.
  • One measurement called global PALS was especially good at predicting these issues, helping doctors decide the best time for surgery to avoid serious heart damage.
