The school health program: teachers' perceptions.

Objective: Understand teachers' perception of a school health program and its relationship with health education activities developed at school.

Methodology: Descriptive qualitative study, in which interviews with 10 teachers at a public school in the city of Barbalha, Ceará, Brazil were conducted. Data were analyzed in thematic categories.

Childhood bruxism: Related factors and impact on oral health-related quality of life.

This study aimed to assess childhood bruxism relating associated factors and the bruxism's impact on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). A case-control study was performed with 3- to 6-year-old children obtained from public preschools in Brazil. The case and control groups had 21 and 40 children, respectively.

Ripened Semihard Cheese Covered with Lard and Dehydrated Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) Leaves: Processing, Characterization, and Quality Traits.

This study aimed to establish a manufacturing protocol and to characterize semihard cheese covered with lard and rosemary during ripening. After the manufacturing protocol was defined, the cheeses were produced with pasteurized and raw milk from Holstein cows, with and without (control) coating, and then ripened for 60 d. During this period the physicochemical properties, color, proteolysis, texture profile, and sensory acceptance were performed.

Tissue apoptosis in mice infected with Leptospira interrogans serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae.

Background: This investigation aimed to evaluate the occurrence of some apoptotic features induced by Leptospira interrogans serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae infection in young BALB/c mice during 2, 4, 7, 10, 14 and 21 days post-infection (dpi).

Methods: The animals were euthanized and lung, liver and kidneys were harvested to histopathology analysis and immunohistochemistry to caspase-3 antigen detection was performed.

Results: Chromatin condensation in kidney and liver tissues, but not in lung tissue, was observed.

Analysis of access to hypertensive and diabetic drugs in the Family Health Strategy, State of Pernambuco, Brazil.

Objective: To evaluate the access to drugs for hypertension and diabetes and the direct cost of buying them among users of the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil.

Methods: Population-based, cross-sectional study of a systematic random sample of 785 patients with hypertension and 823 patients with diabetes mellitus who were registered in 208 randomly selected FHS teams in 35 municipalities of the state of Pernambuco. The selected municipalities were classified into three levels with probability proportional to municipality size (LS, large-sized; MS, medium-sized; SS, small-sized).

Osteogenic potential of mesenchymal cells derived from canine umbilical cord matrix co-cultured with platelet-rich plasma and demineralized bone matrix.

Canine mesenchymal cells (MSCs) derived from Wharton's jelly were co-cultured, then supplemented or not supplemented with platelet rich plasma (PRP) and demineralized bone matrix (DBM) to verify osteogenic differentiation. Osteoblastic differentiation followed by mineralized bone matrix production was found to be significantly higher (p < 0.05) when MSCs were associated with PRP/DBM in culture after 14-21-days of induction.

Improving recorded volume in mesial temporal lobe by optimizing stereotactic intracranial electrode implantation planning.

Purpose: Intracranial electrodes are sometimes implanted in patients with refractory epilepsy to identify epileptic foci and propagation. Maximal recording of EEG activity from regions suspected of seizure generation is paramount. However, the location of individual contacts cannot be considered with current manual planning approaches.

Redescription of Astyanax guianensis Eigenmann 1909 (Characiformes: Characidae), a poorly known and widespread fish from the Amazon, Orinoco and Guiana Shield drainages.

Astyanax guianensis is redescribed based on the holotype, paratypes, and additional specimens from the rio Essequibo in Guyana, rio Orinoco in Venezuela and from several localities in the Amazon river basin in Brazil, Colombia and Bolivia. Astyanax guianensis is diagnosed by having five to 10 maxillary teeth, 31 to 35 pored lateral-line scales, 21 to 25 branched anal-fin rays, and a dark vertical humeral blotch followed by a clear area and then by a dark longitudinal stripe, ending before the caudal-fin rays. In addition, comments on the importance of revisionary studies on the species of the Characidae are provided.

Plasticity of mesenchymal stem cells from mouse bone marrow in the presence of conditioned medium of the facial nerve and fibroblast growth factor-2.

A number of evidences show the influence of the growth of injured nerve fibers in peripheral nervous system as well as potential implant stem cells (SCs). The SCs implementation in the clinical field is promising and the understanding of proliferation and differentiation is essential. This study aimed to evaluate the plasticity of mesenchymal SCs from bone marrow of mice in the presence of culture medium conditioned with facial nerve explants and fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2).

Pathophysiological, cardiovascular and neuroendocrine changes in hypertensive patients during the hemodialysis session.

The pathophysiological mechanisms of arterial hypertension during hemodialysis (HD) in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are still poorly understood. The aim of this study is to investigate physiological, cardiovascular and neuroendocrine changes in patients with ESRD and its correlation with changes in blood pressure (BP) during the HD session. The present study included 21 patients with ESRD undergoing chronic HD treatment.

Grazing behaviour of a non-herbivorous characin: revisiting plasticity.

Feeding behaviour and diet of Bryconamericus microcephalus differed between canopy conditions. At the open canopy site, a behavioural modification, grazing on algae, was observed. This was also reflected in gut content analysis and suggests behavioural plasticity in response to resource availability.

Spatial distribution of dengue disease in municipality of Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, using the Geographic Information System.

The dengue viral infection is one of the most relevant vector-borne diseases in the world. The disease can manifest in a variety of forms, from asymptomatic to a condition of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). The last reported cases in Brazil correspond to 80% of the cases reported in the Americas, which emphasizes the magnitude of the problem.

Peritoneal dialysis and inflammation.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a kidney replacement therapy for end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Despite being a lifesaving treatment, the rate of mortality in patients under PD is elevated, mainly due to the chronic peritoneal dysfunction which is characterized by inflammation, peritoneal fibrosis and neoangiogenesis. The inflammatory process is trigged and modulated by the type of the peritoneal dialysis solutions (PDSs) used during PD.

Rapid prototyping of three-dimensional biomodels as an adjuvant in the surgical planning for intracranial aneurysms.

Purpose: To fabricate a three-dimensional biomodels of intracranial aneurysms, using rapid prototyping technology, to facilitate optimal anatomical visualization of aneurysms prior to and during surgery.

Methods: Four intracranial aneurysms cases were selected for this study. Using CT angiography images, the rapid prototyping process was completed using a PolyJet technology machine.

On the use of discrete steps in robot-aided flexible needle insertion.

Needle steering devices present great potential for improving the safety and accuracy of medical interventions with percutaneous access. Despite significant advances in the field, needle steerability remains an issue to be solved by the scientific community. In this paper, we propose the use of discrete steps in flexible needle insertion, inspired by the manual procedure performed by physicians.

A two-dimensional oxamate- and oxalate-bridged Cu(II)Mn(II) motif: crystal structure and magnetic properties of (Bu4N)2[Mn2{Cu(opba)}2ox].

A new compound of formula (Bu4N)2[Mn2{Cu(opba)}2ox] (1) [Bu4N(+) = tetra-n-butylammonium cation, H4opba = 1,2-phenylenebis(oxamic acid), and H2ox = oxalic acid] has been synthesized and magneto-structurally investigated. The reaction of manganese(II) acetate, [Cu(opba)](2-), and ox(2-) in dimethyl sulfoxide yielded single crystals of 1. The structure of 1 consists of heterobimetallic oxamato-bridged Cu(II)Mn(II) chains which are connected through bis-bidentate oxalate coordinated to the manganese(II) ions to afford anionic heterobimetallic layers of 6(3)-hcb net topology.

Hemispheric surgery for refractory epilepsy in children and adolescents: outcome regarding seizures, motor skills and adaptive function.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to report the seizure outcome, motor skills and adaptive motor functions in a series of children and adolescents who underwent hemispheric surgery, analysing the risk-benefits of surgery.

Methods: The clinical course, seizure and motor function outcomes of 15 patients who underwent hemispheric surgery were reviewed.

Light and phosphate competition between Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii and Microcystis aeruginosa is strain dependent.

The hypothesis that outcomes of phosphorus and light competition between Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii and Microcystis aeruginosa are strain dependent was tested experimentally. Critical requirements of phosphorus (P*) and of light (I*) of two strains of each species were determined through monoculture experiments, which indicated a trade-off between species and also between Microcystis strains. Competition experiments between species were performed using the weakest predicted competitors (with the highest values of P* and of I*) and with the strongest predicted competitors (with the lowest values of P* and of I*).

Corpus callosotomy in a patient with startle epilepsy.

Startle epilepsy is a syndrome of reflex epilepsy in which the seizures are precipitated by a sudden and surprising, usually auditory, stimulus. We describe herein a girl who had been suffering with startle-induced seizures since 2 years of age. She had focal, tonic and tonic-clonic seizures, refractory to antiepileptic treatment.

[Computerized nursing process: methodology to establish associations between clinical assessment, diagnosis, interventions, and outcomes].

The Nursing Process is a care technology that guides the sequence of clinical reasoning and improves the quality of care. This article reports the development of a Computerized Nursing Process (CNP) for the Intensive Care Unit. The study was conducted in three main steps: discussion and understanding of the International Organization for Standard 18104; theoretical expertise regarding the ICNP® 1.

Inflammation, neoangiogenesis and fibrosis in peritoneal dialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a form of renal replacement therapy used in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD). It is based on using the peritoneum as a semipermeable membrane through which ultrafiltration (UF) and diffusion occur. Despite several benefits, PD has long-term complications, including inflammation, neoangiogenesis and fibrosis.

We herein present the synthesis and X-ray structures of five copper(II) complexes of formulae [Cu(bpca)(CF3SO3)(H2O)]·H2O (1), [Cu(bpca)(Phpr)(H2O)]·3/2H2O (2), {[Cu(bpca)]2[Cu(opba)(H2O)]}·H2O (3), {[Cu(bpca)]2(H2opba)}2·6H2O (4) and [Cu(bpca)(EtH2opba)]n (5), where bpca = bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl)amidate, Phpr = 3-phenylpropionate, CF3SO3(−) = triflate (anion of the trifluoromethanesulphonic acid), H4opba = N,N′-1,2-phenylenebis(oxamic acid), and EtH3opba = monoethyl ester derivative of the H4opba. 1 and 2 are mononuclear copper(II) complexes where the copper atom is five-coordinate in distorted square pyramidal surroundings with a tridentate bpca and a water molecule (1)/carboxylate oxygen (2) building the basal plane and a triflate oxygen (1)/water molecule (2) filling the apical position. 3 is a neutral tricopper(II) complex where the [Cu(opba)(H2O)]2− unit acts as a bis-bidentate ligand toward two peripheral [Cu(bpca)]+ fragments.

Structural characterization of the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) cluster in Calyptratae (Diptera: Schizophora) and its implications for molecular phylogenetic analyses.

The internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) of the eukaryotic ribosomal DNA (rDNA) cluster plays an essential role in processing of the ribosomal RNA, which is primarily accomplished by the secondary structures acquired by the molecule after transcription. Two possible structural conformation models have been proposed for the ITS2 region, the "ring model" and the "hairpin model," and the former has been widely used in many molecular phylogenetic analyses incorporating structural information available to date. To evaluate the validity of this model, in vitro transcribed ITS2 molecules from species representing the three superfamilies of the Calyptratae clade (Diptera: Schizophora), namely Cochliomyia hominivorax, Musca domestica, and Glossina morsitans, were submitted to enzymatic digestion with single- and double-stranded specific nucleases (RNases I, A, T1, and V1).

Redescription of Astyanax guaporensis Eigenmann, 1911 (Characiformes: Characidae), a small characid from the rio Madeira basin.

During recent expeditions to several localities in the rio Madeira basin, a poorly known species of Characidae described more than a century ago, Astyanax guaporensis Eigenmann, was collected. The species is herein redescribed based on the type material and many recently collected specimens. The species seems to occur only in the rio Madeira basin, rio Amazonas drainage.

New species of Pyrrhulina (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Lebiasinidae) from the Brazilian Shield, with comments on a putative monophyletic group of species in the genus.

Pyrrhulina marilynae, new species, is described. The new species can be distinguished among congeners mainly by presenting a conspicuous, dark, zigzag shaped primary stripe, extending to distal end of median caudal-fin rays, reduction of the number of precaudal vertebrae, absence of postecleithrum 2, and nine principal rays on caudal-fin dorsal lobe.
