The NorA and TetK efflux pumps mediate resistance to fluoroquinolone and tetracycline antibiotics by actively extruding these compounds and reducing their intracellular concentrations. Consequently, intense research has focused on inhibiting these efflux mechanisms using antimicrobial agents derived from natural or synthetic sources. This study used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) to analyze the various functional groups present in p-coumaric acid.

Background: Robot-assisted vitreoretinal surgery makes it easier for the surgeons to perform precise and dexterous manipulations required in vitreoretinal procedures.

Methods: We systematically evaluated manual surgery, conventional two-hand teleoperation, a novel one-hand teleoperation, and automation in a needle positioning task using a realistic surgical eye model, measuring the expert surgeon's performances and the novice's learning curves.

Results: The proposed one-hand teleoperation improved the positioning accuracy of expert surgeons , enabled novices to achieve a consistent accuracy more quickly , decreased the novice's workload more quickly , and made it easier for novices to learn to conduct the task quickly .

Ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/R) is a leading cause of acute kidney injury (AKI) in conditions like kidney transplants, cardiac surgeries, and nephrectomy, contributing to high global mortality and morbidity. This study aimed to analyze the protective effects of 2'-hydroxychalcones in treating I/R-induced AKI by targeting key pathological pathways. Considering strong antioxidant action along with other pharmacological roles of chalcone derivatives, six 2'-hydroxychalcones were synthesized via Claisen-Schmidt condensation and analyzed for their protective effects in an I/R induced AKI model using HK-2 cells.

This study investigated the anxiolytic, anticonvulsant and memory preservation effects of the flavonoid robinin. The compound, administered at doses of 4, 20 and 40 mg/kg, did not show toxicity after 96 h of monitoring. In behavioural experiments with zebrafish, robinin did not cause significant changes in motor functions, but it impairs locomotor activity and demonstrates anxiolytic properties, evidenced by the increase in the time spent in the clean zone of the protector.

Nanoemulsions (NEs) possess properties that enhance the solubility, bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy of drugs. Chalcones are compounds known for their antifungal properties. In this study, we evaluated different emulsification techniques to create alginate nanoemulsions containing chalcone (1E,4E)-1,5-bis (4-methoxyphenyl) penta-1,4-dien-3-one (DB4OCH).

Introduction: Prostate cancer (PC) remains a significant global health concern, with prognostic assessments largely reliant on the Gleason Classification System. While it has proven effective, subjectivity in interpretation persists, prompting the need for complementary approaches. Reactive stroma (RS) has emerged as a potential candidate for enhancing PC characterization, as it reflects intricate interactions among stromal, epithelial, and extracellular matrix components.

  • Rabies, a serious zoonotic disease, is mainly transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is crucial to prevent the illness, especially after dog and cat attacks in São Paulo.
  • Between 2013 and 2017, over 572,000 cases were reported, primarily from dog and cat bites, with a notable number of individuals not receiving adequate treatment despite recommendations for PEP.
  • The study highlights a significant overuse of rabies vaccines and immunoglobulin, suggesting a pressing need for better training for health professionals to properly follow health guidelines.

We evaluated the impact of burnt carcasses on the probability of finding Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann, 1819) and Lucilia ochricornis (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), and the time it took for them to arrive at the experimental carcasss. These species are biological indicators of the postmortem interval (PMI) in forensic scenarios. Using stillborn pig carcasses, this study analysed how different degrees of burning affect the level of attraction and colonisation by these species.

Evolutionary body size decrease has profound consequences for the morphology of an organism. In the evolution of the Characidae, the most species-rich family of Neotropical fishes, a prominent trend is the reduction of body size. The most typical effect is the simplification and reduction of morphological features through terminal deletion processes, resulting in the loss of skeletal elements and structures.

Skeletal muscle (SM) injuries are a very common occurrence among athletes during training and/or competitive periods, resulting in time loss and absence from sports. Of several existing interventions to improve SM recovery, the nutritional approach has emerged as integral part to improve the physiological response and maintain the body composition to promote a rapid and safe return to play. Growing evidence supports that the physiological response to SM injuries results in a number of changes, suggesting the relevance of a personalized nutritional approach, according to the degree of immobilization, SM mass loss, strength and function.

Glioblastoma is a malignant neoplasm that develops in the central nervous system and is characterized by high rates of cell proliferation and invasion, presenting resistance to treatments and a poor prognosis. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a therapeutic modality that can be applied in oncological cases and stands out for being less invasive. Photosensitizers (PS) of natural origin gained prominence in PDT.

Arboviruses are etiological agents in an extensive group of emerging diseases with great clinical relevance in Brazil, due to the wide distribution of their vectors and the favorable environmental conditions. Among them, the Mayaro virus (MAYV) has drawn attention since its emergence as the etiologic agent of Mayaro fever, a highly debilitating disease. To study viral replication and identify new drug candidates, traditional antiviral assays based on viral antigens and/or plaque assays have been demonstrating low throughput, making it difficult to carry out larger-scale assays.
