Scorpions belonging to the Tityus genus are of medical interest in Brazil. Among them, Tityus stigmurus is the main scorpion responsible for stings in the Northeast region. After a sting, the scorpion venom distributes rapidly to the organs, reaching the kidneys quickly.

EJC07 isolated as endophytic fromBauhinia guianensis, a tipical plant of the Amazon. The compounds (4S)-4,8-dihydroxy-1-tetralone (1), uracil (2), uridin (3), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (4), ergosterol (5), ergosterol peroxide (6), cerevisterol (7) and ducitol (8) were isolated by chromatographic procedures and identified by spectral methods of 1D and 2D NMR and MS.

Rats exposed to a live predator (a cat) present anxiety-like behavior and an increased number of nNOS-positive neurons in this brain area one-week later. Moreover, stress-related behavioral changes in rodents can be prevented by systemic or local vMPFC nNOS inhibition.

It is characterized by a restrictive ventilatory syndrome requiring ventilatory support under non-invasive ventilation. The authors describe a clinical case and the anaesthetic management of a patient with inclusion body myopathy candidate for vertebroplasty, which highlights the importance of locoregional anaesthesia and of noninvasive ventilation and includes assisted cough techniques, maintained throughout the perioperative period.

Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is a promiscuous enzyme involved in the metabolism of xeno- and endobiotics and proposed as a biomarker of hepatotoxicity. The aim of this work was to explore the effects of nevirapine and its phase I metabolites, 2-hydroxy-nevirapine and 12-hydroxy-nevirapine, on PON-1 activities.

We genotyped for HLA-DRB1 locus 1228 patients with AIDs-213 with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), 166 with Psoriasis or Psoriatic Arthritis (Ps + PsA), 153 with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), 67 with Systemic Sclerosis (SSc), 536 with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and 93 with Myasthenia Gravis (MG) and 282 unrelated controls. We confirmed previously established associations of HLA-DRB1(∗)15 (OR = 2.

Background: Bronchial artery embolisation (BAE) becomes a mainstay in the treatment of hemoptysis.
Objective: To characterise patients with hemoptysis undergoing bronchial artery angiography (BAA) for embolisation, evaluating outcomes.
Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients with acute severe or chronic recurrent hemoptysis admitted to the Pulmonology department and submitted to BAA for purpose of embolisation.
Snake envenomation (Bothrops genus) is common in tropical countries and acute kidney injury is one of the complications observed in Bothrops snakebite with relevant morbidity and mortality. Here, we showed that Bothropoides pauloensis venom (BpV) decreased cell viability (IC50 of 7.5 μg/mL).

Among rheumatologic diseases, it occurs most frequently in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and systemic vasculitis. Despite new diagnostic tools and therapies, it remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Methods: Ten microliters of a suspension of Escherichia coli endotoxin (O55:B55) was inoculated and kept in contact for 1 hour with different substances categorized as follows: group 1: auxiliary chemical substances: 5.25% and 2.
Objective: We investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of strontium ranelate (SR) in arthritis models.
Materials And Methods: Rats received 1 mg zymosan (Zy) or saline intra-articularly. Other groups were subjected to anterior cruciate ligament transection in the right knee, as an osteoarthritis (OA) model, or a sham procedure.

Background: Cissampelos sympodialis (Menispermaceae), known as "Milona" has a specific verified medicinal use for the treatment of diarrhea and respiratory tract diseases. This work aims to evaluate the antimotility and antidiarrheal activity of crude ethanolic extract (EtOHE-Cs), and the total alkaloid fraction (TAF-Cs) obtained from aerial parts of C. sympodialis.

The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for ACF in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Materials And Methods: A matched case-control study was conducted to assess the factors associated with acute Charcot foot from February 2000 until September 2012.
Purpose: Auto-titrating continuous positive airway pressure (APAP) devices were developed to improve treatment efficacy and compliance in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). Since there are insufficient data on the optimal pressure range setting, we aimed to compare the adherence, efficacy and tolerability of treatment with high-span versus low-span APAP.
Methods: Seventy-six newly diagnosed OSAS patients fulfilling the treatment criteria were randomised to receive high-span (HS, range 4-15cmH2O, n = 38) or low-span (LS, range 8-12cmH2O, n = 38) APAP.

Fifty JIA patients, 31 (62 %) female, seen between May 2012 and April 2013 in the northeast of Brazil had clinical data and serum collected for determination of 25OHD and parathyroid hormone (PTH) using a chemiluminescent ELISA; 20 age- and sex-matched controls were used for comparison. Mean age was 13.

We aimed to measure the overall satisfaction of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients with healthcare in Portugal and to define its main determinants using SEM.
Patients And Methods: The study included three steps: (i) specification of a patient satisfaction model that included the following dimensions: Image, Expectations, Facilities, Admission process, Assistant staff, Nursing staff, Medical staff, Treatment, Inpatient care, Outpatient care, Overall quality, Overall satisfaction, and Loyalty; (ii) sample survey from 2000 patients, members of the Portuguese Association of the IBD; and (iii) estimation of the satisfaction model using partial least squares (XLSTAT-PLSPM).
Pulmonary haemosiderosis is characterised by chronic alveolar haemorrhage, which can lead to serious cardiorespiratory complications. Although considered idiopathic in most patients, there are many possible aetiologies. We present a case of an 18-year-old woman with pulmonary haemosiderosis since 4 years of age, with an inconclusive initial study, who was treated with systemic corticosteroids and hydroxychloroquine until the age of 12 years, and azathioprine since then.

Levels of inflammatory mediators (interleukin [IL]-1β and tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α) were determined after macrophage stimulation with endodontic content after different phases of endodontic therapy using different irrigants.
Methods: Thirty primarily infected root canals were randomly assigned into 3 groups according to the irrigant used for root canal preparation (n = 10 per group): GI: 2.
