Probiotics are widely used for their health promoting effects, though a lot remain to be discovered, particularly on their mechanisms of action at the molecular level. The functional genomic approach is an appropriate method to decipher how probiotics may influence human cell fate and therefore contribute to their health benefit. In the present work, we focused on Shouchella clausii (formerly named Bacillus then Alkalihalobacillus clausii), a spore-forming bacterium that is commercially available as a probiotic for the prevention and the treatment of intestinal dysbiosis and related gastrointestinal disorders, such as diarrhoea.

  • The RNA binding protein HuR is crucial for regulating the innate immune response, and blocking it can have positive anti-inflammatory outcomes.
  • A new series of small molecules, Tanshinone Mimics (TMs), were developed to disrupt HuR-RNA binding, with furan-containing compound 5/TM11 proving to be the most effective in inhibiting this interaction.
  • Compound 5/TM11 not only enhances solubility but also selectively decreases cell proliferation in macrophages at certain doses, leading to a significant reduction in proinflammatory cytokines in response to LPS.

Objective: Optimized deep brain stimulation (DBS) is fast becoming a therapy of choice for the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the post-operative optimization (aimed at maximizing patient clinical benefits and minimizing adverse effects) of all possible DBS parameter settings using the standard-of-care clinical protocol requires numerous clinical visits, which substantially increases the time to optimization per patient (TPP), patient cost burden and limit the number of patients who can undergo DBS treatment. The TPP is further elongated in electrodes with stimulation directionality or in diseases with latency in clinical feedback.

The aim of this study was the evaluation of suitability of novel mucoadhesive hydrogel platforms for the delivery of therapeutics useful for the management of disorders related to the gastrointestinal tract (GI). At this purpose, here we describe the preparation, the physicochemical characterization and drug delivery behaviour of novel hydrogels, based on self-assembling lipopeptides (MPD02-09), obtained by covalently conjugating lauric acid (LA) to SNA's peptide derivatives gotten by variously combining D- and L- amino acid residues. LA conjugation was aimed at improving the stability of the precursor peptides, obtaining amphiphilic structures, and triggering the hydrogels formation through the self-assembling.

Serial dependence is a recently described phenomenon by which the perceptual evaluation of a stimulus is biased by a previously attended one. By integrating stimuli over time, serial dependence is believed to ensure a stable conscious experience. Despite increasing studies in humans, it is unknown if the process occurs also in other species.

Purpose: The objective of this prospective, single-centre case series was to investigate feasibility, clinical outcomes, and neural correlates of non-invasive Neuromodulation-Induced Cortical Prehabilitation (NICP) before brain tumor surgery. Previous studies have shown that gross total resection is paramount to increase life expectancy but is counterbalanced by the need of preserving critical functional areas. NICP aims at expanding functional margins for extensive tumor resection without functional sequelae.

The main conservation problem of p-PVC artworks is phthalate-based plasticizer migration. Phthalate migration from the bulk to the surface of the materials leads to the formation of a glossy and oily film on the outer layers, ultimately reducing the flexibility of the material. This study aimed to develop a removable coating for the preservation of contemporary artworks and design objects made of plasticized polyvinyl chloride (p-PVC).

Background: The application of massive parallel sequencing technologies in the molecular analysis of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) has enabled the rapid and cost-effective identification of numerous potentially significant variants for diagnostic purposes. The objective is to reduce the number of variants, focusing only on those with pathogenic significance. The 2015 American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) guidelines aid in achieving this goal, but it is now evident that a pathology or gene-specific review of these rules is essential to avoid misinterpretations that may result from blindly applying the criteria.
