Soluble phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity was assessed in rat peritoneal lavage fluid after an intraperitoneal injection of 6% glycogen. Enzyme activity immediately increased 5-fold above basal by 4 h. Activity decreased by only 30% at 18 h and remained at this elevated level through 72 h.

At 10 min, 2 h and 4 h after induction of a reverse passive Arthus reaction (RPAR) in the pleural cavity of rats, pleural exudate was collected and analyzed in vitro for phospholipase A2 (PLA2) acyl hydrolytic activity. Inasmuch as exudate PLA2 was inhibited by addition of EDTA, the acyl hydrolytic activity appeared calcium-dependent. Retinol-binding protein (RBP) that is synthesized and secreted by the human hepatoma cell HepG2 has been measured using a sensitive radioimmunoassay in which RBP in media and hepatoma cell sonicates reacts identically to human serum RBP. RBP was synthesized and secreted when cells were grown in retinol-depleted as well as retinol-containing media. However, immunoreactive transthyretin (prealbumin) could not be detected in concentrated HepG2 medium.

Beta adrenergic agonists, tetradecanoylphorbol acetate, and the ionophore A23187 all stimulate surfactant secretion in type II cells isolated from rats. We found that combinations of these agonists cause augmented secretion, suggesting that the agonists may effect different steps in the secretory process. Previous studies have shown that cAMP is likely to be an intracellular 'second messenger' in type II cells.

The effects of 5-, 5-lactone, 12- and 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids (HETEs) on the synthesis of leukotriene C4 (LTC4), thromboxane B2 (TXB2) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by mouse resident peritoneal macrophages incubated with zymosan particles (100 micrograms/ml) were investigated.
