Article Synopsis
  • - Colorectal cancer (CRC) during pregnancy is very rare, occurring in about 0.8 out of every 100,000 pregnancies, and presents significant diagnostic challenges due to overlapping symptoms and limited imaging options.
  • - The study highlights two advanced CRC cases in pregnant patients and includes a systematic review of 66 relevant studies, revealing that severe symptoms and acute abdomen were linked to earlier delivery compared to milder cases.
  • - Findings suggest that pregnant women who received chemotherapy had better delivery outcomes and similar neonatal health compared to those who did not, indicating that interdisciplinary collaboration is crucial for managing CRC in pregnant individuals.

One emerging problem for onco-gynecologists is the incidence of premenopausal patients under 40 years of age diagnosed with stage I Endometrial Cancer (EC) who want to preserve their fertility. Our review aims to define a primary risk assessment that can help fertility experts and onco-gynecologists tailor personalized treatment and fertility-preserving strategies for fertile patients wishing to have children. We confirm that risk factors such as myometrial invasion and The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging should be integrated into the novel molecular classification provided by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA).

Minimally invasive treatment of uterine fibroids usually requires a power morcellation, which could be associated with several complications. A rare sequela is disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis. Indeed, recurrence or metastasis in these cases could be attributed to iatrogenic or under-evaluation of primary tumors, although a subset of cases is a sporadic sample of biological progression.

Purpose: Collection of an endometrial specimen for investigating infectious agents in the endometrial cavity is an invasive technique that is at times difficult and painful. In order to avoid the need for endometrial sampling in the cases of suspected or evident endometrial pathology, the aim of this study is to investigate the reliability of cervical cultures for detecting infectious agents present at the endometrial level, comparing the results between cervical cultures and endometrial cultures in women with clinical signs of endometrial inflammation.

Methods: In a prospective diagnostic study, in the period from January 2009 to October 2010, we enrolled 404 women referred to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for diagnostic hysteroscopy.

Article Synopsis
  • Clear cell ovarian carcinoma has a poorer prognosis than other types, and the study focused on 240 patients from 20 Italian centers between 1991-2007 to assess their outcomes.
  • The research showed that 45% of patients had early-stage disease, lymphadenectomy was performed in nearly half of the cases, and most patients received standard platinum-based chemotherapy including paclitaxel.
  • Findings indicate that performing lymphadenectomy significantly improves both disease-free and overall survival rates, while the inclusion of paclitaxel does not notably impact outcomes.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are among the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Diagnosis of GIST on ultrasound examination can be difficult because of their similarity in appearance to gynecological neoplasms. We present two cases of GIST originating from the small bowel and the stomach, which were preoperatively misdiagnosed as a uterine leiomyoma and an ovarian tumor, respectively.
