Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the incidence and severity of COVID-19 among patients receiving home parenteral nutrition (HPN) for chronic intestinal failure over a year-long observation period from March 2020 to March 2021.
  • Out of 4680 patients from 68 centers across 23 countries, the cumulative incidence of COVID-19 infection was 9.6%, with 55.1% of patients providing COVID-related data, revealing varying rates of infection severity.
  • Results indicated a higher incidence and severity of infection among deceased patients, and significant proportions of the cohort were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination statuses; 42.8% of deaths in infected individuals were attributed to COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • * DNA samples from 142 participants (85 overweight/obese and 57 normal weight) were analyzed, and taste sensitivity tests were conducted using various taste stimuli.
  • * Results indicated that certain genetic profiles impacted sweet taste recognition, with decreased sensitivity linked to BMI and age, but no significant difference in genetic distribution between normal and overweight/obese groups.

Immune-mediated inflammatory skin diseases are characterized by a complex multifactorial etiology, in which genetic and environmental factors interact both in genesis and development of the disease. Nutrition is a complex and fascinating scenario, whose pivotal role in induction, exacerbation, or amelioration of several human diseases has already been well documented. However, owing to the complexity of immune-mediated skin disease clinical course and breadth and variability of human nutrition, their correlation still remains an open debate in literature.

A healthy lifestyle plays a strategic role in the prevention of BC. The aim of our prospective study is to evaluate the effects of a lifestyle interventions program based on special exercise and nutrition education on weight, psycho-physical well-being, blood lipid and hormonal profile among BC patients who underwent primary surgery. From January 2014 to March 2017, a multidisciplinary group of oncologists, dieticians, physiatrists and an exercise specialist evaluated 98 adult BC female patients at baseline and at different time points.

Background And Aims: The case-mix of patients with intestinal failure due to short bowel syndrome (SBS-IF) can differ among centres and may also be affected by the timeframe of data collection. Therefore, the ESPEN international multicenter cross-sectional survey was analyzed to compare the characteristics of SBS-IF cohorts collected within the same timeframe in different countries.

Methods: The study included 1880 adult SBS-IF patients collected in 2015 by 65 centres from 22 countries.

Background/objectives: Distribution and activity of ghrelin cells in the stomach of obese subjects are controversial.

Subjects/methods: We examined samples from stomachs removed by sleeve gastrectomy in 49 obese subjects (normoglycemic, hyperglycemic and diabetic) and quantified the density of ghrelin/chromogranin endocrine cells by immunohistochemistry. Data were compared with those from 13 lean subjects evaluated by gastroscopy.

Purpose: The aim of our study is to evaluate taste changes in patients affected by solid tumors not involving oral cavity within the first month of standard chemotherapy.

Methods: In this monocentric, prospective, cohort study, we enrolled patients treated at our institution for different types of solid tumors between February and July 2019. Taste cotton swabs assay was used to assess taste changes.

Background And Aim: No marker to categorise the severity of chronic intestinal failure (CIF) has been developed. A 1-year international survey was carried out to investigate whether the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism clinical classification of CIF, based on the type and volume of the intravenous supplementation (IVS), could be an indicator of CIF severity.

Methods: At baseline, participating home parenteral nutrition (HPN) centres enrolled all adults with ongoing CIF due to non-malignant disease; demographic data, body mass index, CIF mechanism, underlying disease, HPN duration and IVS category were recorded for each patient.

Purpose: Taste changes due to chemotherapy may contribute to the high prevalence of malnutrition in cancer patients. It is believed that 50-70% of patients with cancer suffer from taste disorders. The aim of the present study was to analyze the taste alterations in patient population compared with that in controls, also in relation to gender.

Background And Objectives: The present study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between taste identification ability and body mass index (BMI) by studying the response to the administration of different taste stimuli to both sides of the tongue in three different groups of subjects.

Subjects And Methods: Thirty healthy normal-weight volunteers, 19 healthy overweight subjects, and 22 obese subjects were enrolled. For each subject, the lateralization Oldfield score, body weight, height, and blood pressure were determined.

Background & Aims: The safety and effectiveness of a home parenteral nutrition (HPN) program depends both on the expertise and the management approach of the HPN center. We aimed to evaluate both the approaches of different international HPN-centers in their provision of HPN and the types of intravenous supplementation (IVS)-admixtures prescribed to patients with chronic intestinal failure (CIF).

Methods: In March 2015, 65 centers from 22 countries enrolled 3239 patients (benign disease 90.

Background: A comprehensive obesity management can only be accomplished by a multidisciplinary team. Despite the numerous efforts made, a winning solution has not been reached yet. When patients do not respond to conventional treatment, LAGB (Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding) is a generally effective approach with minimal involvement in anatomical modification.

Background: Often, in severe obesity, diet and physical activity are not enough to achieve a healthy BMI. Bariatric surgical approach, in particular laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), has encouraging results in terms of weight loss and resolution of obesity-related comorbidities. However, several months after LAGB, some patients are enable to lose weight anymore and don't tolerate a further calibration because of its collateral effects (excessive sense of fullness, heartburn, regurgitation and vomiting).

Background & Aims: The aim of the study was to evaluate the applicability of the ESPEN 16-category clinical classification of chronic intestinal failure, based on patients' intravenous supplementation (IVS) requirements for energy and fluids, and to evaluate factors associated with those requirements.

Methods: ESPEN members were invited to participate through ESPEN Council representatives. Participating centers enrolled adult patients requiring home parenteral nutrition for chronic intestinal failure on March 1st 2015.

Several studies reported the association between total plasma phytosterol concentrations and the parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis (PNAC). To date, no data are available on phytosterol esterification in animals and in humans during parenteral nutrition (PN). We measured free and esterified sterols (cholesterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and sitosterol) plasma concentrations during PN in 16 preterm infants (500-1249 g of birth weight; Preterm-PN), in 11 term infants (Term-PN) and in 12 adults (Adult-PN).

Background: In severe obesity, most patients do not respond to conventional treatment. Bariatric surgery must only be proposed in specific cases. LAGB gives excellent long-term results if patient scrupulously complies the follow-up.

Morbid obesity is associated with and increased risk of serious comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, cardiovascular diseases, and orthopedic disabilities. Not operative treatments for superobese patients have not been shown to produce reliable long-term benefits, therefore surgical therapy has became the treatment of choice. The number of surgical procedures increased in the last year confirm these data.

A poorly equipped internal medicine doctor (IMD), practising in remote areas of developing countries, can be assisted with expertise teleconsultations by using the common analogical telephone lines. By that way, the clinical cases he challenges became multidisciplinary and the success of the treatment enhanced. Eight cases are reported as examples.

Thirty-five patients, living in Italy and bearing chronicle internal diseases, have been followed by a senior specialist, displaced to Angola for three months. The senior specialist was assisted by a junior physician, who was in touch with the patients in Italy. Both of them were provided with a network equipped portable personal computer.
