Safety, Efficacy and High-Quality Standards of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Procedures in Personalized Sedoanalgesia Managed by the Gastroenterologist: A Retrospective Study.

Performing GI endoscopy under sedoanalgesia improves the quality-indices of the examination, in particular for cecal intubation and adenoma detection rates during colonoscopy. The implementation of procedural sedoanalgesia in GI endoscopy is also strongly recommended by the guidelines of the major international scientific societies. Nevertheless, there are regional barriers that prevent the widespread adoption of this good practice.

Bowel intussusception in adult: Prevalence, diagnostic tools and therapy.

Intussusception is defined as invagination of one segment of the bowel into an immediately adjacent segment. The intussusception refers to the proximal segment that invaginates into the distal segment, or the intussusception (recipient segment). Intussusception, more common occur in the small bowel and rarely involve only the large bowel.

Background: Splenic artery aneurysm (SAA) and pseudoaneurysm are rare vessel's lesions. Pseudoaneurysm is often symptomatic and secondary to pancreatitis or trauma. True SAA is the most common aneurysm of visceral vessels.

Beclomethasone dipropionate in Crohn's ileitis: a randomised, double-blind trial.

Background: Steroids, the mainstay of Crohn's disease treatment, have been associated with systemic side effects.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of beclomethasone dipropionate for maintaining remission induced by a short course of systemic steroids in patients with Crohn's ileitis with or without right colonic involvement.

Methods: Patients (n=84) with active Crohn's disease who achieved remission during a 2-week prednisone run-in period were randomised to receive beclomethasone dipropionate for 24 weeks or continue prednisone for a further 2 weeks followed by placebo for 22 weeks.

5-ASA in ulcerative colitis: improving treatment compliance.

5-Aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) compounds are a highly effective treatment for ulcerative colitis (UC). While UC patient compliance in clinical studies is over 90%, only 40% of patients in every day life take their prescribed therapy. Adherence to medication has been emphasized recently by a Cochrane meta-analysis that has suggested that future trials of 5-ASA in UC should look at patient compliance rather than drug efficacy.

Maintenance of remission with infliximab in inflammatory bowel disease: efficacy and safety long-term follow-up.

Aim: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a long-term therapy with infliximab in Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) patients retrospectively.

Methods: The medical charts of 50 patients (40 CD and 10 UC), who received after a loading dose of 3 infliximab infusions scheduled re-treatments every 8 wk as a maintenance protocol, were reviewed.

Results: Median (range) duration of treatment was 27 (4-64) mo in CD patients and 24.

[Von Recklinghausen's disease and intestinal neurofibromatosis: a case report].

We report the case of a patient with von Recklinghausen's disease, who was admitted with a diagnosis of acute abdomen due to small bowel neurofibromatosis. The patient was submitted to an abdominal CT scan that showed a homogeneous round lesion, with a regular margin, probably belonging to the small bowel and with the appearance of a benign lesion that probably caused an intestinal intussusception. The patient was submitted to a surgical procedure that mainly consisted in multiple small bowel resections.
