Escherichia coli is amongst the most frequent causative agent of nosocomial infections and the overexpression of the efflux pump gene acrB plays a major role in its resistance to various antibiotics. In this study, we evaluated two indole phytochemicals, camalexin and brassinin, as potential AcrB efflux pump inhibitors. Among these two phytochemicals, camalexin increased the accumulation of ethidium in acrB proficient E.

Background: Studies on the impact of the skin microbiota on human health have been gaining more attention. Bacteria are associated with various diseases, although certain strains of bacteria, which are known as probiotics, are considered beneficial. Mixtures of several bacteria (bacterial cocktail) isolated from targeted organs have shown promising modulatory activities for use in skin therapeutics.

The compatibility of free boronic acid building blocks in multicomponent reactions to readily create large libraries of diverse and complex small molecules was investigated. Traditionally, boronic acid synthesis is sequential, synthetically demanding, and time-consuming, which leads to high target synthesis times and low coverage of the boronic acid chemical space. We have performed the synthesis of large libraries of boronic acid derivatives based on multiple chemistries and building blocks using acoustic dispensing technology.

The intestines are key for the absorption of nutrients and water as well as drug metabolism, and it is well known that there are clear differences in the expression profile of drug metabolism enzymes along the intestinal tract. Yet only a few studies have thoroughly investigated regional differences in human intestinal drug metabolism. In this study, we evaluated phase I and phase II metabolism in matched human ileum and colon precision-cut intestinal slices (PCIS).
