Sediments from Polish coastal environments were classified by a quality assessment approach that took into account trace metal and organic micropollutant concentrations, grain-size distribution, and organic carbon content. Generally, no benthic organisms were found at sites where sediments were classified as heavily polluted. However, areas characterized by a moderate contamination showed a variable composition of the benthic community and changing bioaccumulation patterns; therefore, no single species found in the Gulf of Gdańsk could be considered representative of the whole benthic environment.

An experimental design using passive samplers was set up in our laboratories with the aim of preparing a procedure for the assessment of trace metals bioavailability in freshwater sediments. Trace metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn) bioavailability in sediment samples were measured by diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) devices and compared to those simultaneously extracted (SEM) in 1N HCl with acid-volatile sulfide (AVS). During experiments DGT devices were exposed at various times (from 4 to 336 h) in sediments with different physical and chemical properties and metal content, after equilibration with ambient water (1:2) for 24 h.

The role of colloids in regulating element transport, behavior, and bioavailability in aquatic systems is now well-established. It appears that further progress in this research field is being slowed by (i) a limited integration between the geochemical and the biological aspects of the research on colloids and (ii) a persistent gap between well-controlled laboratory studies and real field situations. This paper presents a simultaneous evaluation of the role of colloids in controlling element environmental fate and bioavailability at the confluence between a major river and a polluted tributary.

Comprehensive and contemporary evaluations of physical, chemical and toxicological endpoints have been performed on bed sediments of the Po River, the major Italian watercourse. Two extensive sampling campaigns were conducted in summer and winter low-flow conditions. Composite sediment samples were collected from ten reaches of the main river: the first was located in the upper region (ambient control), and the others downstream of the confluences of nine principal tributaries.

Trace metals, PCB congeners and DDT homologues were determined in composite sediment samples collected from 10 representative sites along the river Po in two separate seasons. The aim was to identify the most anthropogenically impacted areas for future monitoring programmes and to aid development of Italian sediment quality criteria. The surface samples were collected during low flow conditions.
