Long-Term Outcomes of Childhood Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia Treated with Adapted Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster (BFM) Protocols: A Multicentric Analysis from a Developing Country.

Introduction: The objective of the current study was to determine the survival probabilities of children and adolescents with acute lymphocytic leukemia treated with adapted Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster (BFM) protocols and compare our results with the original BFM reports.

Methods: This retrospective study included 695 patients up to 19 years old treated with adapted BFM protocols between 1997 and 2018 in four hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. The 1997-2007 and 2008-2018 cohorts were analyzed separately.

Imunophenotypic Evaluation as a Tool for Monitoring Risks for Blood Malignancies in Gas Station Workers.

Background: Gas station workers are exposed to carcinogenic substances with impact on the hematologic and immune systems. The aim was to apply the immunophenotyping as a tool in the biological monitoring. Methods: This is a workplace-based case-control study with 49 workers and 26 controls.

Complex karyotype including ring chromosome 11 in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia: case report.

Context: Complex karyotypes in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are characterized by an overall low response rate with frequent relapses after clinical treatment.

Case Report: Here, we describe the case of a 61-year-old obese female with clinically diagnosed AML who presented a complex karyotype involving an uncommon abnormality: ring chromosome 11. Immunophenotypic analysis confirmed the diagnosis.

Experimental validation of the complement protein C3a down expression in the plasma of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the penis.

Objectives: We have previously shown the importance of the complement system in differentiating between patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the penis (SCCP) and controls. These patients had low expression of C3a and C4 fragments. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the complement protein C3a as a potential circulating biomarker in these patients by a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test.

Leptomeningeal involvement in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia: a case report and review of the literature.

Background: Central nervous system involvement is considered a rare complication of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and so there is the risk of being overlooked.

Case Presentation: We report a case of central nervous system involvement in a 75-year-old mulatto woman with chronic lymphocytic leukemia after 5 years of follow-up and a literature review on the subject. The clinical course, treatment and outcome are described.

Atypical lymphocytosis in leptospirosis: a cohort of hospitalized cases between 1996 and 2009 in State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Introduction: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease found in tropical and temperate countries, and its clinical diagnostic confusion with arboviruses (dengue fever, oropouche fever and yellow fever), Brazilian spotted fever, viral hepatitis and hantaviruses has been an ongoing public health concern. The aim of this observational study was to demonstrate an association between findings of atypical lymphocytosis and the progression of endemic leptospirosis.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on the demographic, epidemiological, clinical and laboratory aspects of 27 human leptospirosis cases that occurred over a period of 13 years (1996-2009) with no reported epidemic outbreaks in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
