Forecasting study of food-related patents protected by the University of Brasilia, Brazil: Case study.

Patents are important tools to protect innovations in the food industry. They are also indicators of the research and development of an institution. Universities play a significant role in generating and developing innovative technologies.

COVID-19 and the elaboration of personal plans in + 50: a Brazilian experience.

Background: In front of the physical and social isolation, as well as feelings of fear and instability imposed by the pandemic of COVID-19, especially for risk groups such as people 50 + , it became even more relevant to discuss the formulation of personal plans for this age population. This study aimed to analyse the individual plans of people 50 + , considering their perception, feelings and life experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: This is a mixed study (quali-quantitative), using Minayo's methodology for content analysis and frequency analyses, made with 39 participants from the University of Brasília Educational Program, Universidade do Envelhecer - UniSER/UnB.

Drug Use among the Elderly Assisted by the Psychosocial Assistance Center in District Federal-Brasilia.

The inadequate and abusive usage of psychoactive substances is something real that affects Brazil's elderly population, and it is a huge challenge for the public health system and its professionals. Aware of the social impact involving the use of illegal drugs, in 2002, the Ministry of Health instituted a network of psychosocial assistance as a strategy to deal with the problem. This study carried out an analysis of the profile of use of legal and illegal drugs by the elderly who are assisted by the network of psychosocial assistance in the Federal District.

Antioxidants and sensory properties of the infusions of wild passiflora from Brazilian savannah: potential as functional beverages.

Background: The study of biodiversity for species recovery and sustainable use has encouraged research with plants from Brazilian savannah. We aimed to characterize chemical and sensory properties of infusions of passifloras, due to their potential as functional beverages. Infusions and hydroalcoholic extracts of four species of wild passifloras, three varieties of Passiflora edulis and a commercial passiflora tea were evaluated for total phenolics (TPs), total flavonoids (TFs), condensed tannins (CTs), and antioxidant activity (DPPH and FRAP).

Variations in antioxidant properties of strawberries grown in Brazilian savannah and harvested in different seasons.

Background: Strawberries are nutritive fruits and a source of antioxidants. We evaluated antioxidant properties of 'Camino Real' strawberries grown in the Brazilian savannah, harvested in different seasons. Analytical and meteorological data were analyzed by partial least squares regression.

Invertase and urease activities in the carotenogenic yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous (formerly Phaffia rhodozyma).

Invertase and urease are enzyme entities highly associated with the cells of the astaxanthin-producer yeast Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous (Phaffia rhodozyma) during any stage of its cell growth cycle. In this study cellobiose was a more efficient carbon source than sucrose or its hexose counterparts for invertase expression. Extensive ultrasonication or abrasion with glass pearls were required in order to promote enzyme release.
