Objective: We attempted to elucidate the clinical features of chronic hepatitis C patients who develop hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after achieving a sustained viral response (SVR) to interferon (IFN) therapy.

Methods: The clinical features of 130 patients at 19 hospitals who developed HCC after obtaining an SVR were retrospectively reviewed.

Results: Overall, 107 (82%) of the 130 patients were men, with 92 (71%) being ≥60 years of age and 76, 38 and 16 developing HCC within 5, 5-10 and 10-16.

Article Synopsis
  • Combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (CHCC) is a rare type of liver cancer, and a 57-year-old man experienced recurrence after previous surgeries for management.
  • MRI scans showed multiple new liver nodules and laboratory tests indicated significantly elevated levels of α-fetoprotein (AFP) and parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTH-rP), with complications like hypercalcemia.
  • In response, the patient underwent surgery to remove parts of the liver and microwaving treatment, which helped reduce the tumor markers and control the hypercalcemia for a short time, but he ultimately succumbed to disease progression 9 months later.

Background/aims: The evaluation of long-term outcome of subsegmental transcatheter arterial embolization, which was designed to bring about sufficient anti-tumor effect, in the primary cases of small hepatocellular carcinoma.

Methodology: We analyzed and compared the anti-tumor effect and the survival rate in the primary cases of solitary small hepatocellular carcinoma (< or = 3 cm) with cirrhosis treated by subsegmental transcatheter arterial embolization, chemolipiodolization or percutaneous ethanol injection therapy during the last eight years, retrospectively.

Results: The complete tumor necrosis by one session of subsegmental transcatheter arterial embolization, which means that treated tumor showed complete response and did not show local recurrence thereafter, was seen in approximately 50% of the cases.
