Research Background: Virgin olive oil, known as a good source of health-promoting hydrophilic phenols, is traditionally used as a medium for preserving various foods. Phenols in general can form complexes with proteins, but there is little information on the direct contact of virgin olive oil with protein-rich food during long-term storage. In this study, the dynamics of the decline of total phenols in oil used as preservation medium for a traditional (whey cheese skuta) and a modern product (tofu) were compared.

Nutrients play an essential role in many metabolic processes whose deficiency or excess can be harmful to the plant itself and through the food chain to both animals and humans. Medicinal plants used in the food and pharmaceutical industries can be contaminated with increased concentrations of heavy metals. The plant species Seseli rigidum and Seseli pallasii from the Balkan Peninsula are used in traditional medicine and spices in the diet, so it was necessary to determine the mineral composition to ensure their safe application.

Striated muscle undergoes remodelling in response to mechanical and physiological stress, but little is known about the integration of such varied signals in the myofibril. The interaction of the elastic kinase region from sarcomeric titin (A168-M1) with the autophagy receptors Nbr1/p62 and MuRF E3 ubiquitin ligases is well suited to link mechanosensing with the trophic response of the myofibril. To investigate the mechanisms of signal cross-talk at this titin node, we elucidated its 3D structure, analysed its response to stretch using steered molecular dynamics simulations and explored its functional relation to MuRF1 and Nbr1/p62 using cellular assays.

In ornamental geophytes, conventional vegetative propagation is not economically feasible due to very slow development and ineffective methods. It can take several years until a new plant is formed and commercial profitability is achieved. Therefore, micropropagation techniques have been developed to increase the multiplication rate and thus shorten the multiplication and regeneration period.

Article Synopsis
  • - ACEs are linked to an increased risk of health issues and harmful behaviors, with nearly half of young adults in a study reporting at least one ACE, and about 5.6% experiencing four or more ACEs.
  • - The study found that individuals with a higher count of ACEs face significantly greater odds of negative outcomes, such as a 17-fold increased risk of suicide attempts, but supportive childhood relationships can mitigate some of these risks.
  • - Emphasizing the importance of resilience, the study suggests that fostering supportive relationships during childhood could help reduce the long-term impacts of ACEs, highlighting the need for better prevention and intervention strategies.

The purification of phosphorylated proteins in a folded state and in large enough quantity for biochemical or biophysical analysis remains a challenging task. Here, we develop a new implementation of the method of gallium immobilized metal chromatography (Ga-IMAC) as to permit the selective enrichment of phosphoproteins in the milligram scale and under native conditions using automated FPLC instrumentation. We apply this method to the purification of the UN2A and M1M2 components of the muscle protein titin upon being monophosphorylated in vitro by cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA).
