Introduction: The involvement of vitamin D receptor (VDR), which is a key mediator in the vitamin D pathway, in breast cancer etiology has long been of interest.

Methods: We examined the association between polymorphisms in the 3' end of the VDR gene, specifically BsmI and Poly(A), and breast cancer risk within a large, population-based, case-control study of breast cancer. Cases (n = 1,631) were Caucasian and African-American women, aged 35 to 64 years, who were diagnosed with incident, invasive breast cancer between July 1994 and April 1998.

Although well studied in families at high-risk, the roles of mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are poorly understood in breast cancers in the general population, particularly in Black women and in age groups outside of the very young. We examined the prevalence and predictors of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in 1,628 women with breast cancer and 674 women without breast cancer who participated in a multicenter population-based case-control study of Black and White women, 35 to 64 years of age. Among cases, 2.

Background: Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) is a potent mitogen for both normal and malignant prostate epithelial cells. The majority of circulating IGF-I is bound in a complex with IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), which in turn limits IGF-I bioavailability. Multiple studies suggest that higher IGF-I and/or lower IGFBP-3 serum levels are positively associated with prostate cancer risk.
