The aim of this study was to know the biodiversity of total microorganisms contained in two polychlorinated biphenyl-contaminated aged soils and evaluate the strategies of bioaugmentation and biostimulation to biodegrade the biphenyls. Besides, the aerobic cultivable microorganisms were isolated and their capacity to biodegrade a commercial mixture of six congeners of biphenyls was evaluated. Biodiversity of contaminated soils was dominated by Actinobacteria (42.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) is a redox-sensitive neurodegenerative disease affecting the cerebellum, fibre connections in the cerebellum, the peripheral nervous system, and extracerebellar central pathways. Currently, Cuba has the highest reported global rate for this disease. The aim of this review article is to summarize and discuss the current knowledge about evidence of oxidative stress during SCA2.

Understanding the role of oxidative injury will allow for therapy with agents that scavenge ROS (reactive oxygen species) and antioxidants in the management of several diseases related to free radical damage. The majority of free radicals are generated by mitochondria as a consequence of the mitochondrial cycle, whereas free radical accumulation is limited by the action of a variety of antioxidant processes that reside in every cell. In the present review, we provide an overview of the mitochondrial generation of ROS and discuss the role of ROS in the regulation of endothelial and adipocyte function.

Recent findings regarding basic, pre-clinical and clinical studies on a mango stem bark extract (MSBE) developed in Cuba (Vimang) on an industrial scale are summarized. Ethnomedical studies, extract reproducibility, biological effects and clinical evaluations in terms of patient quality of life are described as experimental evidences to support the statement that natural products, even being a mixture of compounds, could be as effective as "monoceuticals" for medical uses. Discussion about the use of "monoceuticals" versus "natureceuticals" in health care and medicine is based on effectiveness and availability, taking Vimang as an example of a natural product with supported scientific evidence to be used as antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulator.
