In this Communication, we present the synthesis and use of [Ru(bpy)(2)(bpy-CCH)](2+), a versatile synthon for the construction of more sophisticated dyads by means of click chemistry. The resulting chromophore-acceptor or -donor complexes have been studied by flash photolysis and are shown to undergo efficient electron transfer to/from the chromophore. Additionally, the photophysical and chemical properties of the original chromophore remain intact, making it a very useful component for the preparation of visible-light-active dyads.

Herein, we report the manganese complex with a novel trianionic ligand, the pentafluorophenyldipyrrinphenol ligand DPPH(3). The X-ray crystal structure reveals that the Mn(III) complex exists in a dimeric form in the solid state. Electrochemical studies indicate two quasi-reversible one electron oxidation processes.

Encaged hexacoordinated metal complexes have long been a fascinating family of complexes, as they confer the same ligand environment to metal ions in different oxidation states. We recently reported that cobalt clathrochelate complexes behave as hydrogen-producing catalysts at quite modest overpotential ( Pantani et al. Angew.

The synthesis and characterisation of the pro-ligand LH4, in which L is the o-phenylenebisamide-2-imidazole and its nickel(II) complexes are reported. The X-ray structures of the fully protonated [NiLH2] and deprotonated [NiL] complexes are presented. The effects of the deprotonation of the imidazole functions on the electronic structure of the complexes are analysed by (1)H NMR, UV/Vis and IR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry.

To mimic the carboxylate-rich active site of the manganese catalases more closely we introduced carboxylate groups into dimanganese complexes in place of nitrogen ligands. The series of dimanganese(III,IV) complexes of tripodal ligands [Mn(2)(L)(2)(O)(2)](3+/+/-/3-) was extended from those of tpa (1) and H(bpg) (2) to those of H(2)(pda) (3) and H(3)(nta) (4) (tpa=tris-picolylamine, H(bpg)=bis-picolylglycylamine, H(2)(pda)=picolyldiglycylamine, H(3)(nta)=nitrilotriacetic acid). While 3 [Mn(2)(pda)(2)(O)(2)][Na(H(2)O)(3)] could be synthesized at -20 degrees C and characterized in the solid state, 4 [Mn(2)(nta)(2)(O)(2)](3-) could be obtained and studied only in solution at -60 degrees C.

In order to test the pertinence of the density functional theory to interpret the photophysical properties of ruthenium(II) polypyridine-type complexes, DFT and TDDFT calculations are performed both on the isolated molecule and in solution media described by the dielectric-like polarized continuum model (PCM). This study is focused on three isoelectronic complexes: [Ru(bpy)(2)(PhenImHPh)](2+) (II), where PhenImHPh represents the 2-(3,5-ditertbutylphenyl)imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline ligand, as well as [Ru(bpy)2(PhenImPh)]+ (I), and [Ru(bpy)(2)(PhenImH2Ph)](3+) (III), obtained by changing the protonic state of the imidazole ring. The structural and electronic properties of the ground and lowest triplet states are fully characterized in vacuo and in water solution, and the absorption spectra in the visible region are also investigated by TDDFT.

The synthesis and characterisation of [Ru(bpy)2(PhenImHPh)]2+ where PhenImHPh represents the 2-(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline ligand are described. The compounds issued from the three different protonic states of the imidazole ring [Ru(bpy)2(PhenImPh)]+ (I), [Ru(bpy)2(PhenImHPh)]2+ (II) and [Ru(bpy)2(PhenImH2Ph)]3+ (III) were isolated and spectroscopically characterised. The X-ray structures of [Ru(bpy)2(PhenImPh)](PF6)H2O.

Excited states of ruthenium polypyridine-type complexes have always attracted the interest of chemists. We have recently found evidence of a remarkable long-lived excited state (30 micros) for a Ru(II) complex containing a heteroditopic ligand that can be viewed as a fused phenanthroline and salophen ligand.1 To unravel this intriguing electronic property, we have used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the ground-state properties of [(bpy)(2)Ru(LH(2))](2+), where LH(2) represents N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-(1,10-phenanthroline)diamine.

The X-band EPR spectra of the IR sensitive untreated PSII and of MeOH- and NH(3)-treated PSII from spinach in the S(2)-state are simulated with collinear and rhombic g- and Mn-hyperfine tensors. The obtained principal values indicate a 1Mn(III)3Mn(IV) composition for the Mn(4) cluster. The four isotropic components of the Mn-hyperfine tensors are found in good agreement with the previously published values determined from EPR and (55)Mn-ENDOR data.

Two Mn(II) complexes are isolated and X-ray characterized, namely, cis-[(L(2))Mn(II)(Cl)(2)] (1) and [(L(3))Mn(II)Cl(OH(2))](ClO(4)) (2(ClO(4))), where L(2) and L(3) are the well-known tetradentate N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine and N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)propane-1,3-diamine ligands, respectively. The crystal structure reveals that whereas the ligand L(2) is in the cis-alpha conformation in complex 1, the ligand L(3) is in the more unusual cis-beta conformation in 2. EPR spectra are recorded on frozen solutions for both complexes and are characteristic of Mn(II) species.

The synthesis and characterisation of the heteroditopic ligand N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-5,6-(1,10-phenanthroline)diamine (DPSalH(2)) bearing a phenanthroline and a bis(salicylidene)diimine cavity are reported. This versatile ligand combines two of the most widely used ligands in coordination chemistry. Sequential metallation of the phenanthroline end with Ru(II) and the salophenic cavity with Cu(II) is described.

The dinuclear phenolato-bridged complex [(mL)Mn(II)Mn(II)(mL)](ClO(4))(2) (1(ClO(4))(2)) has been obtained with the new [N(4)O] pentadentate ligand mL(-) (mLH=N,N'-bis-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N'-methyl-ethane-1,2-diamine) and has been characterised by X-ray crystallography. X- and Q-band EPR spectra were recorded and their variation with temperature was examined. All spectra exhibit features extending over 0-800 mT at the X band and over 100-1450 mT at the Q band, features that are usually observed for dinuclear Mn(II) complexes.

The preparation and the properties of several ruthenium complexes of the general formula cis-RuL(2)X(2) with L = 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-bisphosphonic acid, L' = 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-bisphosphonic acid, and X = Cl, CN, or NCS are reported. The synthesis of these complexes relies on the preparation of the key intermediates cis-Ru(bipyridinebis(diethyl ester phosphonate))Cl(2). The ground-state second pK(a) values of the thiocyanato complexes were determined and are 6.

The dimanganese(II,II) complexes 1a [Mn(2)(L)(OAc)(2)(CH(3)OH)](ClO(4)) and 1b [Mn(2)(L)(OBz)(2)(H(2)O)](ClO(4)), where HL is the unsymmetrical phenol ligand 2-(bis-(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl)-6-((2-pyridylmethyl)(benzyl)aminomethyl)-4-methylphenol, react with hydrogen peroxide in acetonitrile solution. The disproportionation reaction was monitored by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and EPR and UV-visible spectroscopies. Extensive EPR studies have shown that a species (2) exhibiting a 16-line spectrum at g approximately 2 persists during catalysis.
