Interfering with signalling pathways by targeting cell surface proteins has become an important strategy in the development of novel therapeutic agents. Notably, interfering with cytokine signalling revolutionised the treatment of chronic diseases. Cytokines can induce a range of effects that are not always accounted for in assays detecting cytokine binding to cell surface receptors and/or proximal signalling interference.
