Collision cross sections (CCS) have been described as relevant molecular descriptors in metabolomics and lipidomics analyses for ascertaining compound identity. Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) allows to determine CCS with different techniques, such as drift tube ion mobility spectrometry (DTIMS), traveling wave ion mobility spectrometry (TWIMS) or trapped ion mobility spectrometry (TIMS). In contrast with DTIMS where CCS can be obtained directly with measured drift times and mathematical relationship, TWIMS and TIMS techniques require an additional step of calibration to obtain CCS values.

Once merely thought of as the protein responsible for the overall physical nature of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), the Gag polyprotein has since been elucidated to have several roles in viral replication and functionality. Over the years, extensive research into the polyproteins' structure has revealed that Gag can mediate its own trafficking to the plasma membrane, it can interact with several host factors and can even aid in viral genome packaging. Multi-scale characterization of structures and mechanical behavior of biological tissues are of huge importance in order to evaluate the quality of a biological tissue and/or to provide bio-inspired scaffold for functional tissue engineering. Indeed, the more information on main biological tissue structures we get, the more relevant we will be to design new functional prostheses for regenerative medicine or to accurately evaluate tissues. From this perspective, we have investigated the structures and their mechanical properties from nanoscopic to macroscopic scale of fresh ex-vivo white New-Zealand rabbit Achilles tendon using second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and tensile tests to provide a "simple" model whose parameters are relevant of its micro or nano structure.

The organelle genome database GOBASE, now in its 21st release (June 2008), contains all published mitochondrion-encoded sequences (approximately 913,000) and chloroplast-encoded sequences (approximately 250,000) from a wide range of eukaryotic taxa. For all sequences, information on related genes, exons, introns, gene products and taxonomy is available, as well as selected genome maps and RNA secondary structures. Recent major enhancements to database functionality include: (i) addition of an interface for RNA editing data, with substitutions, insertions and deletions displayed using multiple alignments; (ii) addition of medically relevant information, such as haplotypes, SNPs and associated disease states, to human mitochondrial sequence data; (iii) addition of fully reannotated genome sequences for Escherichia coli and Nostoc sp.
